Is the money making Dabo complacent?

We do have to ask ourselves right?
Living large in Clemson on +$10,500,000. $5,000,000 house in Clemson Exclusive resort and home in Florida
How many of us live like that? My best guess is between 0 and 0.000000000001%

FM, you have inspired me. I think i’ll quit my job and go win a national championship. Seems like a good life. I wonder why more people don’t do that?

It has been obvious recently that Dabo is really focused on past accomplishments.

In both the Notre Dame and South Carolina postgame interviews, he went out of his way to talk about how we’ve won national championships, won a bunch of games in a row, etc. That’s great, and I can understand the desire to defend yourself on some level, but it feels like Dabo has more of a rear view mentality than a windshield mentality.

That wasn't the question.
Love Dabo, I'm just concerned that maybe he is becoming a little distracted by wealth.

I don't think so. I think he just came back to reality though as far as hard it is and how far off we are now. He has another run in him. I could see him retiring sometime within the next 10 years though.

referring to the successes of the past when discussing the under performance of the present, it’s clear that he is not as hungry as he was 10 years ago. We made a big mistake in giving him such a huge extension, especially after the drop off in 2021. If you reward regression or you’re going to get more regression.
It’s time for Dabo to shut up about the successes of the past and start doing his job again. And that means fixing his weak choices for coordinators.

Dabo invariably has a need to compete.
But what happens to competitors when they’ve accomplished near every goal possible in their line of work?
Has Dabo lost his drive? Possibly. Is that due to $$? Doubt it. If he has, I’d say complacency sat in after 2x natties.

His ego is off the charts these days.
Ego prevents you from critical self-analysis.
Ego prevents you from accepting and processing constructive criticism.
Ego makes you think you don't need outside help.
Ego prevents you from seeing problematic trends.
Dabo is still a good man, and always has been, but pride has been the undoing of better men than Dabo.

Any mansion would be out of place. It’s a rural, generally low-middle class area of the state.

I genuinely don’t think it’s the money. But interesting question in that I do believe some of the complacency came from an abundance of riches in talent the coaches recruited in the pre portal/NIL era and didn’t necessarily develop other younger players in parallel. Won 2 national titles, had 2 generational QBs, hasn’t made any meaningful, systemic changes to the coaching staff to course correct after TL left (hire from within, do more Clemson stuff that got us to the top) even though the world of college football recruiting has changed significantly.
Wealth can come in many forms. I don’t believe Dabo takes his salary and financial compensation for granted. I do think he’s made some incorrect assumptions about what it takes for Clemson to remain an elite program. What got you there isn’t always the same as what it takes to stay there. I’ll never understand why he’s stayed with DJ in the manner he has. Been strange to watch. Feels like he made promises he doesn’t want to break. I also think he’s made some public comments which are rooted in arrogance and/or false confidence, that are hurting the program.

Complacent, no.
BUT, he now has security.
Not a job for life, but certainly big time, long term financial security.
Also, reputational security. Even if he was to get fired tomorrow, that stink would wear off fast and he would still forever be known as the best coach in school history. The only one to bring two NC’s and more sustained success than we ever believed we’d see. He’ll have TV options, plus 95% of teams would trade their HC for him straight up tomorrow, so he’ll be able to take his pick.
With that security Dabo is not getting lazy. I’m sure his effort is as strong as any of the championship years.
Where the security may be most impactful is his confidence in decisions. His job is safe.
So…
He can do whatever he wants with the QB situation. Even when the fanbase is begging for a change.
Take unpopular risks on the DC and OC hires simply because he sees potential and they are loyal.
Play his kid during crunch time when he is clearly not an elite level WR.
Hold out on use of the transfer portal for at least one season too long.
Criticize NLE to the point that it is a recruiting disadvantage.
Unfortunately, I also think that security increases the chance he replaces Saban at Alabama.

For a long time, I didn’t think it could or would happen.
But, let’s say Bama has another 2 or even 3 loss season next year. UGA wins another and has their pick of the litter in recruiting. Bama fans will start getting antsy and his seat will start heating up. He’s too old for that crap, so Saban retires.
Bama fans would demand the biggest name possible and obviously Dabo would be the first name mentioned. He’ll be flattered by all of the attention, especially in light of an unhappy segment of the fanbase in Clemson.
Then he can walk with a clear conscience knowing Clemson fans will understand because of the 2x NC’s and his alma mater. Bama will back up the Brinks truck and he’ll be loaded with talent above what he can get at Clemson.

I’m afraid he will just use a Saban retirement as leverage to ask for even more money. If that happens I hope he’s allowed to move on to somewhere that will make him happy.
But I don’t think Alabama has any interest in him anymore. They will get Kiffin and be right back on top.

Complacency isn’t the problem. Egomania is the problem. He still wants to win, and expects to win because he considers himself an absolute coaching genius. That might be worse than complacency. He doesn’t see what you see. DJ can’t be that bad because that would mean Dabo was wrong about something. So you’re just imagining things, and you are ungrateful.
I’ll bet he sees the contract as just another competition between himself and other coaches. It probably isn’t so much about really needing another $5M. It’s just a game that is only played by a handful of schools.
Fortunately both problems, complacency and egomania, are curable, but he’s just doubling down at the moment. It will take a 4 or 5 loss season to make him question his awesomeness.
