Indoor track and field national championships

The meet gets underway today at 6 PM ET. There are only two events today, and unfortunately no live stream available for them, but Clemson has a competitor in each of them. Daniel Cope is in the men’s weight throw at 6:00; Marie Forbes is in the women’s weight throw at 8:00. I’ll try to post updates on the field series as the live results come in.

Daniel Cope’s first throw goes 67 ft 5.25 in. He’s in 11th place out of 16 after round 1.

Cope was ranked 11th out of the field of 16 entering the competition, so I don’t know how realistic a shot he has at winning, but he should have a good chance to at least place for Clemson. And throwing can be flukey just by the very nature of it, all it takes sometimes is for somebody to really uncork one to completely change the equation, so you never know.

Cope improves his mark on his second attempt, this time throwing 71 ft 2.50 in. Moves him up to 9th after round 2. He’s the last one in the order, so that makes it easy to keep his score in full perspective by round.

No improvement for Daniel on the third attempt: he goes 69 ft 2.50 in. He’s in 11th place now after round 3.

Unfortunately, Cope does not qualify for the final. The top 9 advance to the final 3 rounds, and he finished the first 3 in 11th place, so that’s where he’ll finish overall.

Well, Cope ends up finishing 11th, right where he was seeded. He didn’t get particularly close to his personal & season best of 74 ft 7.75 in; his best throw tonight was 71 ft 2.50 in. If he had thrown that tonight it would’ve earned him 6th, but in fairness, only 1 athlete in the whole event scored a season best today, so that might be a disingenuous comparison to make. Either way, not a bad performance from him by any means. He’ll finish indoors 11th in the NCAA in the weight throw, which is certainly nothing to sneeze at. He had a great season, and he should be poised to do big things in outdoors too.

Actually, 2 competitors got a personal best today in the men’s weight throw. They just overturned a foul call after a protest was made, which awarded another athlete a valid attempt on one of his throws. That throw ended up being a PR for him and moving him up significantly. But this doesn’t cause any change in Cope’s placing. He still finishes 11th, so he won’t score any points tonight for the Tigers.

Almost time for Marie Forbes to get underway now in the women’s section of the weight throw. She’s in a very similar position to Daniel, she’s ranked 10th coming into the meet (just like with the men, there’s 16 total competitors in the event.) So again, she’s probably a long shot to win or get a high finish, but she’s well within striking range of the top 8 (where the points are.) The women have a good chance to finish in the top 20 as a team, so any points she could score would be huge.

Marie’s third attempt is also foul. She’s still in 3rd place after round 3, so she’ll advance to the final. Don’t want to jinx it, but this is looking really good so far. Hopefully she can get off at least a couple more good throws in the final. Again, we’ve got a long way to go, but if Marie can finish anywhere close to this, that would be massive for Clemson.

Marie Forbes fouls on her final attempt. She finishes the event in 5th place overall. That’s 4 big points for the Tigers. No one in the event threw a season or personal best, including Marie, but that’s a fantastic result for her considering she was projected 10th coming in. To not only score, but to climb all the way up to 5th when she was outside the top 8 before the meet is massive for the team points wise. Great finish to a great season for Marie Forbes, and the Clemson women couldn’t have asked for a better start. This should put them in better position than they likely expected heading into day 2.
