I went to school at clemson

May 11, 2012, 7:45 PM

My degree is worth more if we stay in the ACC. Anybody who disagrees is in denial.

Come on guy...

May 11, 2012, 7:50 PM

education is a small price to pay in return for Clemson football dominance!!

Your priorities are misguided

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ha! See that's the thing

May 11, 2012, 7:54 PM

We wouldn't dominate in the big XII. It really hurts Cornell graduates to be in the ivy league.

Clemson has no one to blame for its failure to dominate but Clemson.

The ACC, but couldn't get in due to academics. They had to settle for the big XII. Clearly, it would be wise for us to voluntarily leave the best academic conference and follow them to join the big XII.

The bottom line is that perception is reality. Clemson is a good school, and I am proud of my degree. That is why I favor staying in the ACC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So WVa wanted to join

Being in the big 12 would in no way devalue a clemson education

help me with your view of things which differ from mine.

Are there not academic associations that our school belongs to that differ sharply in membership from the members in our sport conference?

If so, then Clemson can continue to belong to the top academic associations and leave the current sports conference with no stain to anyone's degree or the perception of our school. Afterall, trying to project an elitist stance like UNCheat and Virginia is so beneath the vision of Thomas Green Clemson IMHO.

May 11, 2012, 8:29 PM [ in reply to So WVa wanted to join ]

You went to Clemson. Use logic.

There's no logical reason why being in the ACC makes your degree more prestigious. Clemson stands on its own as a fine institution. Saying otherwise is misguided at best.

No, I didn't miss it, I just disagree***

May 11, 2012, 8:29 PM [ in reply to So WVa wanted to join ]

standards for athletes, not the entire student body. Just ask FSU who is ranked outside the top-40, but is still in the ACC. If we left the ACC for the Big XII we would have to adopt their academic standards for athletes, but thats only a minimum requirement. We could keep the exact standards we have now and still have a great university. Moving to a conference with more money would actually help academics bc more money would be brought in. And yes, academics makes money off of athletics bc of the tax that the school puts on the Ath Dept.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow. Do you think it helps FSU to be in the ACC academically

May 11, 2012, 9:58 PM

Nah, that's crazy. I'm sure they are still getting the same caliber of student as they would otherwise. Perhaps that was a twain they joined the ACC.

Ok, so let's assume

May 11, 2012, 9:20 PM

Thar y'all are all correct: being in the ACC does not enhance the academic perception of Clemson (a notion that I deny). Does becoming affiliated with the big XII enhance our perception? And for those who state that athletic conference has nothing to do with academic perception, you and I will have to agree to disagree. The ivy league is an athletic conference. The MEAC is also one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Ok, so let's assume

May 11, 2012, 9:27 PM

I disagree with you, but I would rather be apart of a good football and athletic conference then a so called academic conference. The big 12 has some schools with good academic reputations.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who? Texas ...

May 11, 2012, 9:33 PM

You would learn to hate them just as you do UNC. Trust me, I hate the NC schools athletically with a passion. But I cannot deny that they are good schools, and everyone who promotes defection is overlooking the fact that we would still be an outsider.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Who? Texas ...

May 11, 2012, 9:36 PM

well yea if we were going by ourself...but the only way it works is to get several schools from the east. Big 12 is gonna get more schools from the east to help wvu out

Re: I went to school at clemson

May 11, 2012, 10:08 PM

So did I. I don't remember anybody asking me in a job interview about the schools Clemson plays in sports.

Think of it this way. If the academics in a sports conference meant anything, why isn't Florida and Georgia trying to switch from the worst conference academically to the best?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

SEC is not the worst, but clearly not the best ...

May 11, 2012, 10:14 PM

Your analogy is ridiculous. Again, perception is reality.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: SEC is not the worst, but clearly not the best ...

May 11, 2012, 10:18 PM

Do you honestly think when regular students are looking for a college they actually choose based on what conference they are affiliated with

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I went to school at clemson

May 11, 2012, 10:20 PM

This has to be one of the dumbest arguements I have seen lately. In no way does being in a athletic conference makes a degree less valueable. I have never seen anyone be turned down for a job b/c they went to a school in the SEC, Big 12, Sunbelt, MAC, and other conferences. There are many people from those schools that has been successful in education, business, military, etc. I'm heading into my senior year at OU and when I earn my degree, I will be proud of it no matter what. I am confident that if I ever pursue a career outside of the military, my degree will help me achieve whatever goals I set for myself.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would be willing to bet

that more kids attend schools based on athletic prowess other than academics

I understand what you're saying, though, because if we do move to a conference that is not academically strong then future Clemson degrees may not be valued as much.

As I have repeatedly stated, the ivy league is an athletic conference. No crap, people don't ask you what conference your school was in at a freaking job interview! If they are, you obviously went to the wrong school. The folks who think that Clemsons academic reputation is not affected at least in part by athletic conference are just Again, in DENIAL.

How is it affected? I mean...is Clemson going to lower their admission standards? Are they going to drop GPA standards on some majors? Is Clemson going to drop in the rankings is US NEWS and the Princeton Review? So, I got a couple of family members in high school and they may want to go to Clemson...do I need to tell them that if Clemson joins the Big 12 they need to find another school?

Having spent 6 months doing technical recruiting for a Fortune 500 company an English degree from anywhere is not much good if you want a telecom or computer type job. I had a resume from a sales person at BellSouth, photo attached, she had been a Memphis State Pom Pon girl when they were national champions (and yes she was hot). Did she get an interview, no. Why, we weren't looking for telecom sales people. After you are out of school 5 years it is more important what you have done than where you went to school. I also had a guy with a Masters in Computer Science that wrote a 50+ page technical proposal about a project. When I asked him why we should do the project, his reply amounted to "because we can." When I explained to him we only did things that saved the company money, or improved service to the customer, he was astonished. No one had ever told him that before. After you get hired it is what you do, not where you went to school.

May 11, 2012, 11:28 PM

I just don't get the "wine and cheese" attitude which is so against the small Republician farmer attitude of Jefferson--and does not match Clemson's founder who wanted to create "a high seminary of learning in which the graduate of the common schools can commence, pursue and finish the course of studies terminating in thorough theoretic and practical instruction.”

Re: I went to school at clemson

As someone who recruited college campuses for my company, I can promise you conference affiliation is not even on the radar of making anyone's degree more or less valuable.

also have a degree from Clemson. It's value has been great but it had zero to do with what athletic conference the university is in. I went to the wall and asked my degree, "What conference are we in?" It didn't even bother to answer.
