kids to get knocked down a peg or two by a total outsider. Now, in professional horse racing at the Triple Crown level, there are no truly poor people, only different degrees of affluence. But, it sure sounds like this owner was due for some good luck to fall his way.
Salute!

I watch the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness, and the Belmont every year, and that race yesterday reminded so much of a Kentucky Derby race that I watched in 1973 when Secretariat came from next to dead last and won the Kentucky Derby, and went on to win the Triple Crown at the Belmont by 30 plus lengths. IMHO, there has never been a greater Thoroughbred than Secretariat, Big Red was the Man of race horses to me personally!!!

A very good argument can be made that Secretariat is the best athlete ever.

Including humans.
His records from the 1973 Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes still stand to this day.
That is even more incredible when you consider how many records from nearly 50 years ago in other sports have been completely shattered.
Secretariat would’ve won yesterday’s Kentucky Derby by 10-15 lengths. Incredible to think about.

I, too watched that 1973 Derby, on a black and white 12" tv in a little country store. I have not missed one since. I have also loved that horse ever since. But as the years have passed I have grown to respect the second place horse that day, Sham, who share a Damsire with Secretariat, Princequillo . He raced a full race and became only the second horse to break the 2 minute barrier in Derby history (there has since been a third, Monarchos in 2001). He also finished a close second at Pamlico. His was a case of being born at the wrong time. I know he faded to dead last in a field of 5 ater leading briefly at the Belmont but Pincay pulled him up knowing there was a problem. He never raced again. I read a book about Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand that talks about how a horse's spirit can be broken, also, by running as hard as they possibly can and being passed by another horse, to the point where they will never be competitive again.

Sham gave it everything he had--couldn't help feeling sorry for him. I've always thought that he was pushed too hard at the beginning of the Belmont. His owner was so determined to beat Secretariat.

"horse tracker" listing the top six or so horses on the screen. Rich Strike made his move so late, he never even showed up on that at any point in the race!
That jockey rode the absolutely perfect race, if you go back and watch how he manuevered in and out between other horses.

I just rewatched the route the jockey took in that race. If you could chart a path pre-race, you could not do better.

the starting gates were all full, as far as I remember without going back and looking again. A lot of horseflesh to navigate for ALL the jockeys. It's literally a dirty way to make a living, unless your horse is always out front!

The winner got into the Derby just a few hours before it was run (another horse scratched). Twenty horses are allowed, which I believe is more than any of the other stakes.

I guess announcers say the same kind of things every year but it was amazing that Mike Tirico said Rich Strike had the longest odds at 79-1 but this is the Derby and you never know. Amazing run.

The best part was watching the winning horse keep looking

At each horse he was going to pass as if he was letting them know, “ I see you and new, ney, this is my race!” That horse just kicked into overdrive in the final stretch like I have never seen. It loo’ed like he had more he could have given too if he needed it. Amazing attitude by that one!

Google the Secretariat race at the Belmont when he won the triple crown, talking about taking off, Secretariat run out of the life of every horse on the track by a quarter mile, and it was the earliest that Secretariat ever went to the front, and he checked out on the field!!!

times... trying to find Rich Strike early in the race. He's nowhere to be seen! Even as they're about to hit the final stretch, I paused it... he's in about 14th or 15th place, and totally boxed in on all sides with no way out. The moves that jockey made to find a gap here and there... brilliant riding. And when he got to the inside and hit that extra gear... wow. Even the announcers didn't notice him until he was streaking past the leaders...
And as someone else commented... he was eyeballing the leader with his head almost turned sideways... like, oh you wanna race, huh... OK, let's go... I'm about to smoke your nuts...
Instant Classic, as they say. What a story. It would be like a walk-on freshman at SW Missouri St winning the Heisman...

Shot through one crucial gap
May 9, 2022, 11:48 AM
|

that karma gave him a little favor there. And held back through middle of race and conserved for the final burst. Biggest thing was his horse had the right stuff and just flat out-ran the other two in the final two hundred yards. Drone camera shows his path and the gap he shot at the crucial moment. He actually had a good passing lane to the right of that horse, but the other horse to the right moved over to his left, making it look like a gap. Either way, it was basic maneuvering through some traffic when your engine has more get-up-and-go than the other guy.

According to the trainer, that was the path they hoped to get in the race. They were helped by the ridiculous pace of the lead horses. Those horses were "fried," as they say, by the time Rich Strike reached them. He was still fresh. I want to think that maybe he is just better at longer distances.
BTW, Rich Strike will be running in the Preakness in two weeks.

But I was not upset one bit when Rich Strike came from no where to win it! What an incredible story and moment in history! Horse was not even supposed to be there.
Kinda reminded me of “lil ole Clemson” when we shocked the world again and proved we belonged with the big boys!
I’ll be pulling for Rich Strike from here on out.

Amazing race and an incredible story!
May 8, 2022, 6:24 PM
|
|
This one should be a movie one day. Consider:
-The owner lost about 16 horses and most of his trophies a few years ago when a fire burned down his stable. -He was not interested in racing again until a longtime friend introduced him to a trainer, they hit it off, and started working together. -This horse has no pedigree, and was purchased for a mere $30,000. -This horse didn’t even get into the Derby until the day before, when another horse scratched. -As the owner tells it, they found out they were in the Derby a few minutes before the Friday deadline. -The horse was 80-1 odds. -This jockey had never been in the Kentucky Derby.
Just an incredible story all the way around! Love it!

that goes back, "top", "Middle", "bottom", several gen's at least, and is quite intricate, with many genetic possibilities and pipelines. This one too, for sure. In fact, his sire has a pretty good race record. I would say if you did the same research you did for basketball, you'd agree, but obviously you didn't, on this point.

His sire, Keen Ice, was a good stakes-winning horse (beat Triple Crown winner, American Pharoah), but unproven as a sire. Rich Strike is from his first crop. His grandsire is the great Curlin--a two-time Horse of the Year. Not bad at all.
