The problem with downtown CHS is all the canals and runoff streams they filled in. That's mostly why it floods down there on a heavy rain/hightide.


Here's a terrible map from 1718 when it was a walled city. The furthest left part of the wall is now basically broad street, the furthest right is essentially Calhoun street, See those two big canals on either side of those? They haven't existed since about the 1750's. On the Ashley River side, there was an old tidal pond that was drainage for that side of the peninsula that was filled in as well.
