In my very limited experience, the black labs have a better, calmer disposition than the yellers, but I've never had a chocolate one.
So yeah, my opinion is pretty baseless.

and Chesapeake bay retriever mix. She was crazy AF but I thought that was the Chessy in her.
Purely by looks, I'm going chocolate. Selecting for a pet, yellow.

We had labs growing up. Can confirm. The chocolate labs are always crazy/hyper. Usually dumber than the others. I have no idea why but it has been true of all my labs and my family's labs.

Had to put my Golden down back in January, missing that old boy.
What breed should I get next? Torn between another golden or a German shepherd. We just need a pet, my brothers have the bird dogs.

Do you have kids?

If so, you need a GS puppy. As young as you can get. They are really great and really protective when they are raised around kids.
My neighbors just got a full grown GS because they are getting up in age and want the protection.
He doesn't mess with us but he will growl and aggressively bark at the kids when they are in the yard.
I'm just waiting for him to cross the pond with that same attitude towards my kids and he will have a bullet between his eyes.
On the other side of the coin my mom was brought up around GS and had one who got ran over when she was a puppy. Since then she wouldn't allow the kids anywhere near the roads and would grab them by the seat of their pants and drag them back to the house if they got too close.

if you have the room for a dog that needs

to run around a lot and want something great with the kids, get a beagle. The beagle I have now rivals my black lab is amazing.
But they are pack dogs and at least need access to other dogs and plenty of room to run.
I hate it when people get a beagle then keep in in the crate or a small back yard all day.
Mine gets out of my daughter's bed in the morning when I let them out, he runs around all day chasing deer, fox, etc then comes back home at night and gets back in her bed to sleep.

Have you considered goldiedoodles or laberdoodles.
I had two pure goldens and both lost their life to cancer around 8yrs old.

black are the best. Best temperament, easily trained and just great all around.
Yellows are ### holes. Or at least mine was. Make sure you get him trained professionally.
Chocolates are the absolutely most hard headed out of all of them. Have got to have them trained or they will destroy your life.
