Lucas and his “flat stick” . . .

Jul 1, 2022, 11:29 AM

We talk about it all the time . . . while he shot -3 on his Opening 9 today (started on #10), he still had his woes . . .

here’s a hole by hole recap of his “flat sick” adventures::

#10 - made a 9 1/2 footer for birdie

#11 - made a 14’ 11” for par

#12 - 2 putted from 46’ 6” for par

#13 - made a 9 1/2 footer for birdie

#14 - 2 putted from 3’ 3” for par . . . Ugh!

#15 - made a 15’ 5” for birdie

#16 - 2 putted from 20’ 7” for par

#17 - made an 11’ 11” for birdie

#18 - 3 putted from 6’ 11” for his lone bogey . . . Double Ugh!!!

Really solid . . . I’m sure all he can remember is #14 and #18 . . . Here’s to another solid 9 to close!!!

Been following him for years and it's in his DNA. He may improve temporarily, then it resurfaces. He really needs to embrace Dave Stockton's methods.

Sorry @Skeeta56. That might have been me that TD by accident. Thanks for the recap. It is frustrating... I'm sure he's worked on it tirelessly. He's not the only one... Doc had his problems too. 3 putt from 33 and 18 ft. Smh.

Sadly, Lucas will need - 2 on the back for the cut. It will be -2 - don't think it'll go to 3 but you never know.

No worries at all C-gal!!!!!!!

Jul 1, 2022, 12:27 PM

I’m sure I deserved many that were never given!!!

As for the “flat stick” issues . . . I’d be ecstatic if I could putt like he did on 7 of those 9 holes . . . and I understand everyone misses a 3 footer occasionally . . . but the 3-putt from 6’ hurt my feelings terribly

Back to checking on our Tigers . . .

Back to Lucas and his “flat stick” . . .

Jul 1, 2022, 1:52 PM

Once he made the turn and started his second 9 (the front), this is how he’s rolling it:

#1 - 2 putt from 24’ 2” for par

#2 - 2 putt from 22’ 10” for par on a par 5

#3 - 37’ 3” for birdie!!!!!!!

<###### width='640' height='360' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen src='https://www.pgatour.com/bin/pgatour/video-player/iframe.html?ec=6308895389112'>

#4 - 17’ 2” for another birdie!!!

<###### width='640' height='360' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen src='https://www.pgatour.com/bin/pgatour/video-player/iframe.html?ec=6308897290112'>

#5 - 2 putt from 15’ 10” for par

Lucas is currently -5 for today’s round . . . -2 for the Tournament . . . currently T-49th Place . . . the Cut is still holding @ -1

Kudos to MyfavOrange® ‘s Weekly Pick . . . Sahith TheegalaIs -4 for today through 15 holes and is sitting squarely on the current Cut Line

Jul 1, 2022, 1:53 PM

May just be me looking at it wrong but is his issue more with his accuracy with his approach shots? Seems to me fewer 20 ft putts would increase your putting stats

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How much closer you want him to get???

Jul 1, 2022, 1:57 PM

He missed his putts after approaches of 3’ 3” and 6’ 11” . . . He 2 putted on the 3’ 3” and 3 putted on the 6’ 11”

I have no issues with 2 putts from 20’ . . .

Before he even hit his second shot, the guys doing the play by play on the featured group coverage were joking that Lucas needed to avoid hitting it within 8 feet.

Jul 1, 2022, 4:39 PM [ in reply to How much closer you want him to get??? ]

Oh I agree with the 2 putts or more from less than 10 feet for sure. Should rarely happen. Lag putting has a real place in golf from 20 ft or more. And his putting needs work. I'm just saying his shots into the green need to be closer as well and could skew his putting stats

Re: How much closer you want him to get???

Jul 3, 2022, 9:17 AM

That is NOT his problem. He is consistently in the top of the PGA in strokes gained on approach shots. This year about 35th in the league.

Lag putting is not his issue either. If there were a stokes gained inside 15 feet available, you’d see Lucas is ne’er the bottom and has been through his career. If he had just at the Tour AVERAGE in this area, he’d have had a Hall of Fame career.

Jul 1, 2022, 2:05 PM

Thanks for the tiger golfer updates each week. Question…how are you able to determine the putting distances that accurately?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Through the Link I supplied . . .

Jul 1, 2022, 2:17 PM

Click on golfer’s name

Click on the hole you want to view

“Shot Tracker” will give a visual of the hole being played, its yardage and hole handicap

“Play-by-Play” will give you each shot, how far it was hit and yardage to hole

Note . . . While on the “Shot Tracker” mode there is an icon on the right to enlarge the view and better yet a “3D” red icon that will open a new window to show each shot . . . also whenever you see a triangle on a hole, there is a video of that shot below . . . also specific info the player can be obtained with links under his name

These features are only available on “Big Boy” league . . . less information is shared with tge Korn Ferry Tour, Tour Canada, etc.

Hope that answers your question adequately. Thanks for asking!!!

It's going to be real close as to -3. Need some guys to bogey.

Meanwhile, Doc just flat out played himself out of it. Not sure how he hit a tee shot 197 yards on the par 4 5th. In the fairway too... Then he probably tried to recover from it and overcooked his second and ended up with a double. Would love to see what happened. Of course he had 2 three putts from short distance too... He hits some headscratchers. That 130 yard par 3 leaving 90 feet short is mindboggling. Not for me but for pro's.

number, at -2. Easy to see why the Tour started making cuts the Low 60 (or less) plus ties, instead of the Low 70 plus ties that it used to be. The John Deere is a little more liberal, taking the Low 65 plus ties. There are currently TWENTY players tied for 56th, at that -2 number. So, far more than 65 guys will actually make the weekend.

In some Tour events this year, I noticed they "cull" players to only have an actual 50, or 60, or whatever the number is, play the weekend. I think the "culled" players all get some minimum amount of money. Not sure what the "cull" criteria is.

Edit: Did a little more research, and the cull is a "secondary cut" that is done after the third round, to get down as close to (for the John Deere) 65 players as possible for Sunday's final round. 65 plus ties after the THIRD ROUND would still advance to Sunday, the players culled would all get a same small check.

The Cut is now @ -3 . . . Lucas is Out . . .

Jul 1, 2022, 6:19 PM

unless a few just above him bogey . . . still a chance, but it’s not looking good!

On the Korn Ferry Tour event, it looks like Sam will be playing through the weekend . . . His -3 today has him @ -2 for the Tournament and currently T-41st Place . . . the Cut currently sits @ -1 . . . Carson and Jacob won’t be playing anymore this week

Alice Hewson shot -2 in her first 9 today @ the German Masters and currently sits @ -5 for the Tournament and T-8th Place . . . No updates for a while . . . Maybe a weather thing

I think you may be describing the MDF, which stands for "Made Cut, Didn't Finish". They used to use that when the cut was still 70. As you mentioned, it was used following the third round when there were more than 78 players that made the original cut. They would award you points for your finishing position, but you did not advance to the final round.

When the PGA moved the second round cut line to 65 for the standard PGA events, they did away with the MDF.
