How does Norvell and FSU pick up from here

and put things back together? For starters they purchase DJ for their QB. No telling their next moves. I am sure it will involve the portal and giving out cash.

I get that Norvell kinda had to go that route to rebuild that team, but now he's in a pickle and is dependent on the portal and all of it's inconsistencies and lack of loyalty.

Back to back to back to back to back to back..... top 10 recruiting classes.
He got his first one this year. If he gets another one next year, he'll still need the portal. He'll need at least 3 straight top 10 recruiting classes to be able to compete as a top 10 team without relying on the portal for 5 to 8 starters.
Just look at the depth FSU had this year. The top 22 were plenty good enough to be competitive with anybody in the country. But, look how much better UGA's 2nd and 3rd string were compared to FSU.
When Norvell came to FSU the talent was so bad they couldn't have had a winning record playing in the Sunbelt. If he hadn't gone heavy into the portal he would have had 3 straight losing records and been fired.
If Norvell doesn't get at least 5 quality starters in the portal this year, including DJ having a solid year, then FSU will not be competitive with Clemson in 2024.

Sounds like a plausible minefield. I can't imagine having to navigate that.
The portal combined with the NIL is a quagmire. What a mess.

Bret,
I know OSU had a good season with DJU, but in the games I watched he looked like the same ole DJ.
So I wouldn't be expecting too much - and nobody knows his weaknesses better than us

The portal so reminds me of the days of JUCO players "plugging" gaps in recruiting. It rarely ended well when teams used that route too often. I want to beat FSU every year but don't want to see them not have a competitive team either.

FSU and other schools looking to portal first for their new QB rather than through recruiting ??
I mean, if I am a high school elite QB and any team I was maybe going to is always going to portal to get their guy is a bit of a no go. Maybe that is just me, and most of these QB's are only for a year but not always.
The portal may give but I also feel it can just as easily take away. Is a guy like DJ really worth that kind of risk ?? Do you honestly believe that FSU is good enough everywhere else to challenge again, and you think DJ is the guy when he never had success with great talent at Clemson ?? I dunno

From what I’ve read and heard, DJ was way down in the list for qb’s they wanted but he was the one who said yes as he didn’t have any other offers! Not saying this is 100% true but it makes sense.

Schools do not give out cash. There may be NIL collectives that are connected to schools in some way but schools are for education, not hiring athletes.
As far as FSU goes, that game was flushed by yesterday because only a shell their team was playing.

Based on their two backups it shows the need for a quality QB. Neither of those backups are Travis, and neither is DJ. They will regressing for sure.

They had a great recruiting class. They will have to rely on the portal again, but I think after this class we will see the numbers drop. One caveat being: If they can avoid a future mass exodus via the portal.

If DJ was used like Tebow with the weapons around him he could be a problem.
He’s pretty money on 3rd or 4th and 1.
But he’s definitely not the mentality of Tebow. Stronger arm though.

Certainly not super concerned about DJ but FSU has "picked up" big time compared to what they were when Norvell took over. And as many have said in this thread they had the best recruiting class in the ACC.
Hoping they have a rough year next season and their momentum stalls a bit. To the contrary we need a big year next year to get our momentum going towards being elite again. But not sure if that is attainable without using the portal like EVERYONE else is.

I suspect he is serious about culture. Has shown he can grab a portal kid if need be and has back to back top 10 recruiting classes.
