Top 5 WRs at Clemson since 1977 ??

Jan 11, 2013, 9:46 AM

This is my personal ranking ... what's yours?

1. DeAndre Hopkins
2. Rod Gardner
3. Perry Tuttle
4. Jerry Butler
5. Terry Smith

Certain to move up the list next year ... Sammy Watkins and Aaron Kelly deserves to be somewhere in the Top 10 for sure.

PS: Yes, I am old enough to have seen them all and a lot that go further back than 1977.

Gary Barnes was drafted by the Falcons and actually caught the first TD pass in franchise history.

Phil Rogers was a prolific receiver during the late 60s catching passes from Jimmy Addiosn.

Charlie Waters had a terrific senior year after coming to Clemson as a highly touted QB.

How about Dwight Clark?***

I thought Clark played WR for Clemson. BTW, he did a better job of picking girlfriends than AJ. Anybody remember Sean Weatherly? Is she the hottest girl ever at Clemson?

Loved him as a Tiger and followed him as a 49er. But, I only remember a couple of significant receptions while he was at Clemson. He was a very productive pro, but at Clemson he was a supporting cast member to Jerry Butler.

Great pro career, always under the radar at Clemson.

The guy on the other side of the field always got the double coverage.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't a WR. He was a TE if I remember correctly.

Top Tight End?

Jan 11, 2013, 9:52 AM

Put these guys in order:

Bennie Cunningham
Dwayne Allen

Anybody remember Anthony King? He was the starting TE in '77 and '78. He was a decent pass catcher, but a better blocker. I remember one game when the RT went down and they moved Anthony inside. If you don't remember him on the field, then maybe you know his son, Tavarrez King. I was so bummed when he went to Georgia.

Also ... Jim Riggs and Bubba Diggs ... LOL. Love how that sounds.

Would you really bump Perry Tuttle for Jacoby Ford?

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I dont know if he would be top 5, but I loved watching

Derrick Hamilton play

Re: Good choice ...

Jan 11, 2013, 10:11 AM

Derrick was a good one. But, he's a perfect example of a guy who had no business jumping to the NFL early.

If he comes back for his senior year, he's probably firmly placed in our Top-5 WR list.

No offense, but how can you call Nuk the best in Clemson history when he is arguably not even the best on his current team? I love Nuk's effort and his stats are ridiculous, but honestly can you say he is head and shoulders above Sammy much less someone like Terry Smith or Derrick Hamilton or even Tony Horne? Had Tony Horne played with Tajh and in Morris's offense he may have had 2000 yards receiving.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To me, Nuk is definitely the best on the current team until

Jan 11, 2013, 10:54 AM

proven otherwise. I gave Sammy his due, but until he has more than a spectacular freshman year, he is not Top-5 to me ... but I have no doubt that he will be.

And I can only judge former players on actual production and I won't speculate on what they might or might not have done in a different system or with a different supporting cast.

Wasn't Aaron Kelly the record holder before Nuk? Why no AK?***

Re: Wasn't Aaron Kelly the record holder before Nuk? Why no AK?***

Jan 11, 2013, 10:51 AM

Because, for me personally, statistics were not my ultimate criteria. Productive stats and making memorable significant catches at critical times weigh more heavily with me.

Fair or not ... a lot of fans base their opinion on both Jerry Butler and Rod Gardner on one spectacular play each.

Aaron Kelly had a great statistical career and if he makes that one spectacular catch against Boston College, he is cemented for all time as one of the absolute greats.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yea, I've always had JB #1 but would put Nuk there now.

Jan 11, 2013, 11:04 AM

Here's my top 10:

1. Nuk Hopkins
2. Jerry Butler
3. Terry Smith
4. Rod Gardner
5. Perry Tuttle
6. Aaron Kelly
7. Sammy Watkins (moving up fast)
8. Derek Hamilton
9. Chansi Stuckey
10. Antwuan Wyatt

Xavier Dye

Jan 11, 2013, 11:07 AM

Or Terrance Ashe

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll add that the reason Hopkins, Butler, and Terry Smith

Jan 11, 2013, 11:09 AM

should be 1, 2, and 3 is that they could do it all, go deep over middle and go high to catch the ball, caught everthing with their hands, great speed and running ability affter the catch, clutch, etc.

Tuttle and Hamilton never went up high to catch passes. They were both great after the catch for sure.

A. Kelly? Youngbood?

solid

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: A. Kelly? Youngbood?

Absolutely ... both solid players for us. Loved them both. But, I couldn't personally bump any of the five I mentioned for either one of these.
