Did you catch this comment, in the article?
"Though Clemson has great fan support and better infrastructure than most of the ACC, it's a unique school/campus that simply will not appeal to a significant number of elite players."
OMG- someone else..who doesn't get it. ..Doesn't understand, "there's something in those hills"

Yes, that was a back-handed compliment - "unique"

sounds good to me for recruiting! And it is...Parents like the relative safety of a small town atmosphere. I made the mistake of going to Ohio State for grad. School. The surrounding area is a dangerous ghetto!

"Unique" meaning that players aren't paid, they're made to go to class, and they don't have to go downtown with a weapon in fear for their lives on the weekends? That's fine. I'll take that. Because a top 15 class every season for the last 5+ years certainly seems to me like a "lack of elite talent" wanting to come to Clemson. Give me a break.

But lots of very successful college programs are in small towns so idk what they are thinking.

I can't make much sense of it. If it were just about size

Vanderbilt and Miami are in the same range. If it were about the town, I wouldn't call Auburn, AL a "metropolis" nor Opelika. Anderson probably has as much or more to offer, and Greenville is not that far. It sort of strikes me as a social or cultural comment.
But even if it were about school and town size, I still don't see how that is a negative for so many potential recruits. It's not like they mostly come from major urban centers. And for those who don't want to be in a 25,000++ student school or in larger towns/cities, the choices are in fact more limited. And I think Clemson is a stand out in that respect.

Same writer about Dabo - "unique school/campus... not"???
Dec 25, 2013, 8:49 PM

8. Dabo Swinney: If you're looking for the next Mack Brown, he's about as close as you can get. He's smart and personable with the media. Players love playing for him. Coaches love working for him. Oh, and he wins. Clemson is 31-8 in the last three seasons with two BCS bowl bids. Folks, that's not easy to do at Clemson, a program that wasn't a factor nationally at all for two decades before Swinney took over. Though Clemson has great fan support and better infrastructure than most of the ACC, it's a unique school/campus that simply will not appeal to a significant number of elite players. Swinney has convinced a lot of them to come to Clemson, and he'd recruit like a madman at Texas. He'd also be tremendous on the Longhorn Network.

have kept the one they had.
Any idea who the Texas fans, alumni, and Board of Trustees favor now? The college president and AD do the hiring but ignoring those other's opinions doesn't happen often, or for long.

Spurrier isn't going anywhere except back to Gainesville to retire and bask in his Florida glory years. He's 68. I don't know if i would call him a "young" 68 but he's not freakin' Lou Holtz either.

Why did the article say the following about Clemson" "Though Clemson has great fan support and better infrastructure than most of the ACC, it's a unique school/campus that simply will not appeal to a significant number of elite players."
I do not really see that as being true.

Unique must mean top quality academics, supportive and positive community, picturesque campus and alumni in leadership positions.

This surely has been a very quiet search on their part. I'm guessing whoever they are talking with is someone with either a BCS bowl game or a NFL playoff games to be played.
I'm ruling out semi-retired coachs like Gruden, Tomlin, etc

What Spurrier wants is to another one at a school that's never won one before.

Dabo and Texas
Dec 26, 2013, 10:11 AM
|
|
As Texas works through its top 4-5 candidates, which it appears to be doing....... Saban (not going), Fisher (just about to get rolling at FSU and don't think he'll go) Gundy (Boone Pickens can pay what it takes to keep him, also think he is too abrasive for UT elites) Briles (not leaving what he has built, open new stadium next year) Shaw (rumored to be interested in NFL and Stanford has produced lots of NFL coaches)
I could keep going but I'll just say that I think as the next two weeks pass and Texas still hasn't made a hire I think you will see Dabo's name get mentioned in the media more frequently (assuming there isn't another OB meltdown).
Dabo has the personality that will work for all the media and PR issues at UT. Those demands almost require the HC be more of a CEO type. The consensus, even amongst the biggest Dabo supporters, is that is the type of coach he is.
Dabo would be a good fit at Texas, the Texas bigwigs just haven't realized it yet.
