End of UNC U of SC Game
Sep 1, 2019, 1:39 PM

Has anyone seen an explanation from Mack Brown about the end of game clock management? If U of SC were to have thrown a game winning Hail Mary I’m certain ole Mack would have been ripped to shreds (rightfully so) for awful clock management. This has not been a story because of the sack to end the game. I would love to hear an explanation of what happened.

Mack took most of the blame

one of the first things he said after the game was they made a lot of coaching mistakes
but also put a little bit on the 'young quarterback'
the kid was supposed to take a lot more time with the previous two 'take-a-knees' and on the last one

UNC board says they had decided they weren't going to punt, no matter what, with all the coverage issues they had. (Remember, Bryan Edwards nearly took the previous punt to the house). There was a miscommunication error and an execution issue on the young QB's part.
Issues happen, luckily UNC's D was stout.

Unless you think the snap will be be botched, you directional kick it out of bounds. That puts them out of Hail Mary range and runs the clock down to two or three seconds

No other answer is acceptable. He knew playing against five head he had no worries. Why not give the coots some hope just to make the loss even worse.

Much like Auburn last night kicking the extra point to go up by 6 instead of trying to make it a 7 point lead by going for 2. The way things work out is usually the only difference in a coach being a genius vs an idiot.

Les Miles School of Coaching!
I really think he thought it was 3rd down. I can imagine no other reason that makes any sense. I have never seen another coach do that.

Baffling to me but not as baffling as throwing on third down the previous series instead of running it where USuCk would have to burn their last timeout. Taking a knee on 4th down wouldn’t even have occurred. Having that last timeout is the only reason USuCk was able to get it to 4th down. Clock would have run out without it after 2nd down.

Why didn't UNC strip and score count at the end of the game?***

even throwing up a hail mary pass would have run 5+ seconds

I would have had the QB scramble around as long as possible and then heave it long but out of bounds. Only a penalty (grounding, etc) would have resulted in something worse than what happened.
