Academic Rankings, ACC Dominance?

Jun 18, 2013, 9:38 AM

In light of the recent news of a USuC commit citing easy/low academic standards as a main selling point, I wanted to know more about the quality (or perceived quality) of education for the 5 major D1 conferences. Here are the 2014 US News rankings of Universities (of both public and private Univ.). Obviously this is not gospel, but if you are a prospective student or student/athlete looking for a well-rounded, higher-education experience with a blend of athletic tradition & a respected degree then look no further than the ACC. As a Georgia fan I can not disagree that the ACC has a long history of fine academics ... people joke about other schools, some have substance, some don't ... therefore I have a joke I heard long ago with Georgia at the butt of it ... (Names have been changed to represent the times.)

Paul Johnson was visiting the family of a top OL prospect in south Georgia that had long been known as a Georgia lean, but with GT running a close second. When they sat down in the family room he looked over on the coffee table and saw a rather large quantum physics book. Coach Johnson looked at the prospect and said, "Son, if you are doing that level of work in high school you will have no problem academically at Georgia Tech." The prospect quickly responded, "No, sir. Coach Richt gave me that book and told me that if I went to Georgia Tech I would have to learn that stuff."

Good joke on GT

Having worked with several GT engineers in Atlanta I can relate to their "Sheldon" like stereo-type.

That's what makes the world go around ... I have as sales mentality ... If not for me their work could not be sold and if not for them, I would have nothing to sell.

How does these rankings change when you add Notre Dame and Louisville, and drop Maryland?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was thinking the Big 10 would pass the ACC...

Jun 18, 2013, 10:50 AM

with the ACC's loss of MD and the addition of UofL, but I forgot the ACC is also adding ND and the Big 10 is adding Rutgers. The ACC may actually pick up a bigger lead, in that case.

People totally underestimate UGA's academics .. after the academic "issue" a couple of decades ago ... (Jane Kemp) things have changed a lot.

Rankings based on BOTH public & private institutions

Jun 18, 2013, 12:33 PM [ in reply to Uh, Clemson ranked #25 nationally as a public university.... ]

Harvard, Yale, etc. included. Obviously CU is not Ivy league, but it is THE University of the great state of South Carolina.

The Time of London disagrees

Well, lets see if an impartial News source that can't be "gamed" by their Pres. Barker agrees with USNews.
Well, looky there The University of South Carolina ranked # 299 in the World!
And where is Clemson ranked in the top 400?

...?
Nowhere.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Alas!! a dirty Coot weighs in on USuC academics...

Jun 18, 2013, 2:47 PM

Like I said, the US News is not gospel, but it certainly focuses on American schools. I am not surprised that Clemson doesn’t show up on The London Times international radar, but I also don’t care about what the English have to say, we drove them out 226 years ago after all. USuC has a good international business school, where Clemson’s business school is arguably lesser known, relatively speaking. It was so nice to hear from a coot today, how does the line at the unemployment office look this afternoon?

And honestly now, when was the last time you remember a high school team having won a state championship in academics and football for the same year?
