I posted on here last week that it was a matter of "when" and not "if" on Collins' getting canned.
The Ole Miss annihilation was a tipping point. The UCF loss, where we outplayed them, but lost by 17, was the final straw.
And it appears that AD Todd Stansbury is also likely out. We'll see if that holds up. He tied himself very strongly to Collins after 2021, and bucked against the big-money donors that wanted Collins fired after last season. I think Stansbury pays some sort of price for that.
Going forward, the most important decision for Tech is deciding how badly they want to win at football. If they go forward with the same half-a** approach they've had for the last 20 years, then the next coach will be hamstrung. Even if he's better than Collins - and he very likely will be - he'll hit a ceiling at Tech that's self-imposed.
If Tech goes all-in on facilities, recruiting, academic support, coaching & analyst salaries, and truly tries to reach out, then Tech can become a very strong ACC Football program. We don't need another clown like Collins. We need a serious football coach, and an administration behind him that is willing to spend what it takes to rebuild that program.

Everything you said is true. I think given where GT is located it's a sleeping giant to be honest. Sometimes though, kids don't want to be right at home. Clemson has recruited the Atlanta metro area well in my opinion because of this fact. It's away from home; but not too far! And, it's a good football school.
The next GT coach would have to be a good recruiter and someone who understands the fan base's wants. They are tired of the crew from Athens just showing up and beating up on the jackets i'm sure.
But, what's realistic right now given the situation for GT in terms of wins/losses Smitty? Are the fans thinking the jackets should be winning National titles with the roster they have? Or is it more a situation where: "we should be more competitive"?

No one is delusional about National Titles...

In the short run, we just want to compete.
We've gone 10-28 over the last 3.25 seasons. We've gotten beat by over 40 points six different times. Our last 4 games against P5 competition has a total score of 183-10.
UCF actually didn't play well. We outplayed them, but we STILL lost by 17 points.
In the short run, we just want to compete. I think a school like Tech could easily get to the 9-3 or 8-4 type range, if we were more serious about competing. There's so much talent in Atlanta & the broader state of Georgia.
I'm just making the larger-picture comment that our admin has to decide how badly they want to win. If they go half-a**, like they did for Gailey & CPJ & such, we'll be a 6-6 type of school, with an occasional good team.
And I understand we can't keep all Atlanta kids in Atlanta. But we can get more than we've been getting. There's no reason we can't be a very good ACC football program.

Fair expectation, and it should be doable at GT.

Agree with you that Tech has to decide they care about football again. I can remember when it didn't seem like Clemson cared much about competing in football and am glad we got that fixed.
I'm glad Tech didn't hire someone like Mike Leach, but feel there could be a lot of opportunity on the Flats if they find the right leader and commit to supporting that coach.
Good luck.

Smitty .... the real problem with "facilities" is that there is just no room on campus for them. My son used to take care of the practice field, Grant field, and other sports facilities and if I remember correctly their grass practice field was not even 100 yards long and the new indoor facility took up a lot of area.

I would have loved sticking it to Geoff Collins 1 - 3 more times.
That said, I sorta feel bad for GT fans. Sort of...
