My Dad was a veteran of WWII (Okinawa), worked 42 years for the Celanese Corp., was faithful to his God, Church and community, and took wonderful care of his family! Loved to hunt and fish, also!!

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY TO ALL THE DAD'S ON TNET!!!

My father, a Clemson alumni, fought in Battle of Bulge. His senior Taps annual has tons of KIA of classmates who did not come back. He as well was a great fisherman and loved to hunt dove and quail. He was very active in our church and cared deeply for the welfare of others. I hate he was tormented by what he experienced in the war. Too proud to ask for help with those issues. Happy Fathers Day to my dad in heaven……

My dad has been a blue-collar working man, employed as a meat-cutter/butcher for 37 years now. He was & is an active and present father, now getting to enjoy being a grandfather to my 4 kids. He made sure we had a roof over our heads & ensured my siblings and I understood the value of excellence. He might not have gone to college, but he dang sure instilled in us the importance of getting our college degrees from Clemson.

My father, first and foremost was my best friend and my biggest supporter. He volunteered at the age of 15 for the end of WW2. Back then a lot easier to fool people. He signed a professional contract with the Philadelphia Athletics and Connie Mack upon graduation. He also played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was brought up at the end of a year and got hurt in spring training and quit baseball. Did not pay great back then and he had kids to provide for.

He went and served again, this time in the Navy in Korea. He was what they called a "frogman". His reconnaissance group got caught and he was a POW. He never shared much about this time in his life and what happened.

He went on to play professionally as a billard player against Willie Mosconi and Minnesota Fats. He was a hustler and would bring home some big stacks of cash when I was a little boy haha

The greatest thing he ever did was that he became a Christian. The father I never knew, the one who spent his off time in bars and other activities was now a different man. Whether you believe in God or not, do not tell my dad. It changed him from being my idol to being my hero, best friend and a man I wanted to be.
He never drank or cussed again. Complete 180 degree change.

I miss him!!

You should have saw all the trophies he had back in a closet. He could smash a ball. He got hired by a company to play fast pitch softball. He batted .989 one year with 63 homers. Not sure if that one was on a slow pitch team or not though. Saw pictures of him playing against the King and his court. Went to see them play once and the dad remembered my father and that was a cool moment

Had a very close relationship them prior to then, but sadly I have probably seen and heard the last of them I ever will. I still love my parents, and I miss them, but I have already been through the various stages of grief over it. I’ve moved on.

I am lucky that I have great children and in-laws; I will celebrate my father-in-law this Sunday. He is a great Clemson man, always supportive of me and my family, and chooses to be a part of our lives.

Oh how my heart felt broken as I read your post. I'm well up in years, and 20+ years ago, my son told me that he was done with me and had new parents (in-laws) who accepted and loved him, and he had moved on, never desiring to have me in his life again. You need to know that I grew up in a close knit family and tried so hard to grow and develop my family similarly. So, when I heard those words, it hurt deeper than to my core. I tried all I could to gently win him back, and seemingly all to no avail. But I was encouraged by my extended family to never grow weary of doing good, and I'm so happy to tell you that a couple years ago, the bridge was rebuilt. You say you still love your parents. I don't know your story, but I can't help but believe that they still love you, too, and are lost and broken in the knowledge that you've moved on without them. I've just said a prayer for you and for them, and I trust the Lord will find a way to lead y'all back to each other. Life is very, very short. I've heard my friends on their deathbeds. Not one of them ever expressed heartache for not doing more work or for missing Clemson games, but several were broken, saying their greatest failure was not spending more time with their loved ones. Please consider forgiving them and renew your fellowship before one of you is lost forever.

I was blessed to have a great dad. Served in the navy during WW II. Took me to my first Clemson game. Taught me how to do things like grow a garden, wood working and fix whatever was broken. Always loved and provided for our family. He has been gone 20 years and I still miss him but the example he set will always be with me.

12

Jun 17, 2023, 11:21 AM

the hard head, and the bad back, but not the amazing, unfortunately. He was a farmer, ran a sawmill AND a general service garage seasonally in addition to the farming. Whatever it took to make ends meet. He was on the tail end of what is called "The Greatest Generation". He was literally about to get on a boat for military service when WWII ended. He and my Mom raised five of us kids, and put us all through college. (Well, three through Cooterville, so, approximately college in their cases.)

As my sisters told me many times, my Dad and I were exactly alike, which could explain why we had a very contentious relationship until I was well into my twenties. Then, as often happens, he suddenly got a lot smarter. He died at the age of 82 in 1998 from congestive heart failure, miss him every day.

That is so true. My dad was from that generation which is why he did so much and succeeded at what he done. He started building houses and knew nothing about it. He hired two older guys who knew it all and learned everything from them and went on to build 1000's of homes, apartment complexes and garages. He was the youngest of 13 children growing up in the early '30s. He gave me his work ethic, just not the same drive to make it like he did.

My Dad also served in Okinawa in WWII. Was in a foxhole being bombed by Japanese when he heard the Japanese had surrendered. They were all hoping somebody would tell these bomber pilots it was over. As many of the “greatest generation”, he showed greatness by hard work, humility and gratefulness every day of his life after the war.

Also essentially raised four younger siblings after the death of his mom when he was 21. Later drafted at age37 to Army in WW2. Then married a divorcee with 4 teenage kids at age 45 which was very uncommon in those days in SC. Then had 2 more kids. Made it to 95 1/2. Married 50 years. Hard working man. Great man. Great dad.

My Father grew up on a farm located close to the Duke Power plant on Lake Keowee. His father died when Dad was 15. Dad had just finished the seventh grade at Newry school. He had an older brother and two sisters in Furman University. He took over the farm so they could continue their education. They said that they would help him finish his education when they finished. By virtue of his role of Head of Household he was exempted from WWI. The brother decided he was called to become a preacher and went on to the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville.Long story short, by the time his sibling were out of school, Dad had met and married a beautiful young school teacher. So his formal education stopped at seven years.

He was a smart man and a hard worker. He would attend summer conferences at Clemson and read their research bulletins to keep up with new developments. When he married he moved from the family farm and bought his own. In the end he owned three farms.

He believed in education and sent all six of his children to college, four boys to Clemson, and two girls to Winthrop.

His father had not taught him many of little details of farming. For example, when his farther died they hag a relatively large number of hogs. When the little piglets began arriving, he didn't know how to neuter the little males. A kind neighbor helped him. Hence, he taught all the boys every little detail in all aspects of farming, from neutering animals to building houses and barns . For example, the second pig each of us boys saw neutered, we did the job.

He was a kind and loving Dad. He would run races with all the boys and usually win!We hunted, fished, and lived a great young life. Dad was all of ours role model.

After the war he taught high school history and coached the girls basketball team a couple years. Then we moved to the Carolinas where he was a successful business man. When I'd complain about paying taxes he always told me that he thanked God that he owed so much tax as it meant he'd had a good year!

He was a generous, loving husband and father, and always enjoyed gardening so he could give all the veggies away!

Unfortunately my dad died in 1961 when I was 15 years old. He worked for Standard Oil of New Jersey on oil tankers and was commissioned into the Merchant Marines in WW II. I have since found out that the Merchant Marines were the most dangerous of all the service branches during the war. He was a radio officer on tankers, so I assume they were transporting fuel all over the Atlantic and Pacific. He never talked about it, but he was rarely home. He worked for three months straight and then came home for a month, then three more months aboard tankers. My mother really raised us ...... amazing woman.

He was born and raised in Anderson, on Brown Street, with three brothers five sisters. He had a high school education and loved his family more than anything in the world. In the fifteen years I knew him, I never saw him touch a drop of alcohol or say and unkind word or have an argument with my mother. I did hear him say a few unkind words to a man at a construction site that was throwing mud clods at my dog once. The dude knew he was serious!

He taught me to love Clemson even though he was a Wofford graduate. We went to all the Clemson home games in the 70’s and many away games. I’m still a season ticket holder and graduated Clemson in 87. He was very good to me and made sure I had everything I needed and more.

My Dad served in WWII and Korean War. He grew up a couple houses over from Hank Williams Sr. He self taught himself the drums and played and sang Hank's songs as well as other Country and Western music. People were really impressed with how much he sounded like Hank. He was offered to move to Montgomery and Nashville at different times but he had a good life here and was settled in with My Mom and us kids. He enjoyed his family life and enjoyed playing on the weekends. He was always positive and broke out that big leather Country and Western belt when we needed it. I was blessed to have him till 2017 at 90 years old.

He came home, married my Mom and worked for the same insurance company his entire life until he had to retire due to a severe case of Crohn's disease which eventually took him to heaven. Always jovial, joking, laughing. Served as Chorister and on the deacon board of his church and was a wonderful Father to three kids. He died in 2003 and I miss him more every day.

My dad grew up on a family farm, plowed a mule from daylight to dark for $0.25 (for the whole day), put himself through Wofford working many jobs, fought in WWII, wounded four times, return to the 400 acre farm because his wounds prevented him from returning to his chief chemist position, raised five kids and put all through college, started and was first president of Young Farmers Association, and though in the latter stages of Parkinson's, at age 90, he scribbled out memoirs of his life and published it. Dad was a Career soldier with two tours in Vietnam. Dad was everything you would want in a father. There were 4 of us kids and we were always getting into something but he kept us on the right path. Miss you dad.

My dad was a great, humble working man who was honest and fair in every way. I’ve always tried to be the son he knew I would be. He was, without exception the very best dad in the world. Unfortunately I never told him so! But I’m sure he knew.

Dad was born 1907 in Rosman NC, possibly on land his grandfather leased from GW Vanderbilt. (I have a copy of the lease). Family is considered to be one of the nine or so pioneer families of Transylvania County who were brought to the area by Daniel Boone. The home had no indoor bathroom facilities and likely no water. Dad only acquired an eighth grade education. His family, consisting of three girls and two boys along with parents, were stricken with the 1918 flu. They all survived including his four year old sister by imbibing hot moonshine and honey. The family moved to Brevard in the late 20s to Lamb Creek about a half mile west from the entrance to Pisgah Forrest. Food was produced by farming, fishing and hunting, including deer, squirrels, and wild boar. Dad worked for a time with a lumber company which had various logging worksites. Sometime later he worked as a ranger at Pisgah. He moved to G'ville in the mid 30s to find other work and was employed for more than 20 years at McCullough Oil Co owned by former mayor Fred McCullough. He was 34 at the start of WWII and tried to enlist in the Army, Navy and Coast Guard, but was classified 4F. He was a no nonsense type person with a great deal of common sense who treated everyone equally well. Was a long time church member. Knew only one way to work and that was giving maximum effort. Did not like being idle. Continued to drive and cut his lawn past age 93. Lived to a month and a half short of his 95th birthday in 2002.

I would be surprised if your family and mine knew of each other. My Dad grew up in Hot Springs and worked in the same areas as your Dad. My grandfather on my mothers side was a Penland and farmed in the same areas. He was one of several farmers who supplied the Vanderbilts with food for their home in Biltmore. Back in those days textiles were the main employer of the south along with farming. Our university had a lot to do with successes of those two industries .

One of the Greatest men ever in my eyes. Left us in 2015 and I miss him everyday. Got to take him to the Boston College game when Aaron Kelly almost caught the game winning touch down. Even though my Tigers took the L it was one of the Greatest memories I have. Miss you Pops.. . Loved reading all of the comments about the boards fathers.
Happy Fathers to you all and God bless.

who was a Methodist minister. He had degrees from Wofford, Furman, and CLemson. He was a coach, elementary principle, Byrnes High School Hall of Famer....and a FISHERMAN. But, he was most famous for a stunt he and two friends pulled while students a Wofford. They had the bright idea of flushing a cherry bomb down the toilet of the girls bathroom thinking it would blow water up on anyone using another toilet. So, my father was the lookout, while the two other ones lit the fuse, dropped it, flushed it, and ran. My father went straight to the gym where he ran the clock for the basketball game..20 minutes or so into the game he saw one of his conspirators walk in the gym white as a sheet.....The cherry bomb had blown the toilet seat to smithereens and water was every where.....THERE IS A PICTURE OF IT IN THE WOFFORD ANNUAL. About 1955 or 56......And now you know how SPUD fired the cannon at the 2006 GT game. Devilment is just in my blood.

The most profound achievement in his life was to teach me to work and go at it with a goal of perfection. Neither he nor I ever did anything perfect but I can look back and see that though I am not perfect I am a product of one who spent the last 19 years of his teaching that to me.

You see, I was dug out of the mountains in east Tennessee. The only book I ever opened in high school was the literature book during the last year I completed. That was the 11th grade. When I finally realized I was an uneducated moron I wanted to fix myself.

Clemson laughed me to scorn when I tried to enroll and wouldn't give me an application but those at the admin building told me to try jr college and see if I was worth a spot at Clemson. Two Greenville Tech quarters later I too my grade report and picked up the application. I applied in June and received an invitation to enroll three days after dropping off the application. Clemson approved the transfer of 24 hours from G'ville Tech.

I enrolled at Clemson and started fall classes in 1985. Three years later on August 8th I walked across the stage at Littlejohn and grabbed that paper. I had four kids when I enrolled at Clemson and five when I graduated. Poor does not describe what we endured to see that day.

Thanks to my daddy who taught me how to work and do things right.
