Deshaun Watson --- Stoudt/Boyd QB Competition

Oct 21, 2013, 1:57 PM

1.) I can't wait for Deshaun Watson to get here and either beat out Cole Stoudt or redshirt under him and then have Watson break all the records Tajh has set or is in the process of setting.

It will be a marvelous 3 seasons with him as our starting QB. A true "gamer", someone who actually wants the big stage, wants the pressure, wants his team on his back. Kind of like that lil' FSU QB the other night.

2.) A few weeks back my friend brought up this scenario to me. What if Tajh never was the starter the past 2 seasons, such as that we already had a starting QB in place that wasn't going to be removed from his starting job by Tajh. And then this past spring/off-season it was a completely open QB competition between Stoudt and Boyd. My friend thinks Stoudt would have won out but that he couldn't in real life because Tajh was already a 2-year starter. Cole Stoudt seems MUCH more accurate, understanding of the offense, and actually goes through his reads instead of choosing what he's going to do before the snap like Tajh does.

What do you guys think?

I think you are putting too much credit into Stoudt

Oct 21, 2013, 2:01 PM

I think he will be a good QB, but lets not kid ourselves. He's not a Boyd. You get to see Stoudt in mop-up time against a worn out or second team D. Boyd takes the snaps against their #1s. I doubt Stoudt would even say he would beat out Boyd.

All we've seen out of Stoudt is to know that the season wouldn't be over if Boyd went out with an injury.

I do think we've seen enough of Stoudt to know that with Watson coming in, Chad Kelly might not see the field as a Tiger starter.

Stoudt just gets rid of the ball so fast though, and actually to a receiver. Tajh does neither with any sort of consistency.

I think it is in the best interest of Chad Kelly to transfer, I want him to get to play somewhere, and I don't see him ever starting for Clemson.

I think Stoudt is an ADEQUATE backup and that's it.........

Oct 21, 2013, 2:04 PM

he plays in garbage time and is nowhere NEAR the talent that boyd is.

as for deshaun watson.......i'll be in the minority here, but I think HE or KELLY should be the starter next year. We lose a LOT on offense. I want a QB that has 3-4 years to start/grow rather than a "one and done" qb.

Re: I think Stoudt is an ADEQUATE backup and that's it.........

Oct 21, 2013, 2:06 PM

What is the "A LOT" we lose on offense?

The only significant loss is Sammy. I think our receiving core as a whole will be better, RBs better, O-Line better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

watkins is "a lot".......so was nuk and we see that now.....

Oct 21, 2013, 2:15 PM

i'm not saying we don't have talent to fill in...............i think we'll be fine at RB, but losing Tajh AND sammy is a WHOLE LOT.

I think we have talent coming back next year, but it will be nothing like a top 10 WR NFL draft pick or record breaking QB.

I say don't count Kelly out from any competition. He is not going down without a fight and if that means a lot more time on the field to get better then he will do that. I am not convinced that Stoudt or Watson beats him out. Now if that happens then he will probably transfer but all I'm saying is he is a competitor. That's why he cam back so fast from ACL surgery.

Oh I know he is for real, but with those 3 all battling for the job I just think he is on the short end of the stick.

Why are you guys abandoning Boyd?

Oct 21, 2013, 2:05 PM

Just because he had a off game doesn't mean you kick him to the curb. He got us a ACC crown and Chickfila Bowl Champs. Stop acting like the coots and start thinking

Thought this well before the FSU game. Boyd is just wildly inconsistent and inaccurate. I believe Nuk + Sammy is more of the reason we won the ACC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think that is fair to Boyd

Oct 21, 2013, 2:13 PM

Tajh is about 5% points behind where he was last year in terms of completion percentage when he was considered very accurate.

But Hopkins has the best hands we've had from a WR in years. Sammy doesn't have nearly the hands that Hopkins had. Boyd seems to be having some trouble with that flair route to the flats, but his WRs are dropping a ton of easy catches.

If you had a 4th and 16 now, the only person I'm 99% sure would catch the ball is Adam Humphies.

Re: I don't think that is fair to Boyd

Oct 21, 2013, 2:17 PM

Adam Humphries has the best hands in college football, 0 drops. Does everything right, never gets fatigued. He needs to be our 3rd corner since he played that in HS anyway. Before the year, I thought he would for sure lead our team in catches, but Morris doesn't like to use him THAT much. Tajh never found him the 5+ times he was WIDE OPEN Saturday.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How about the time Tajh did find him

Oct 21, 2013, 2:22 PM

but Humphries just never turned around to look for the ball and the FSU corner came in for the interception? Nobody is exempt from blame for Saturday night.

That ball was under thrown by at least 15 yards. Tajh didn't even know Humphries route. He threw it to where he was when he saw him open. He didn't lead him to the corner like the route and defense dictated. It should have been a TD but Tajh missed. Adam did turn around but only to see it picked off 15 yards away.

Good response

Oct 21, 2013, 2:31 PM

The QB who tells the team what play they are running didn't know the route the WR was running. That is pure gold!

By the way, WRs should look for the ball as soon as they break on a crossing route. You don't run 40 yards down field and then decide to look. The QBs job is to throw it when the receiver is open at any point after the WR is open. Even if you have a deep route you have to know you are by yourself and look for the ball.

Re: Deshaun Watson --- Stoudt/Boyd QB Competition

Oct 21, 2013, 2:35 PM

Tajh doesn't tell anyone the play. The sideline tells the offense the play. It wasn't a crossing route. It was a slot post route where our x-receiver kept the safety high and the CB who was beat in his f-zone is the one who made the INT.
