Coach K GOAT

I never pull for Duke to win anything. However, you have to give coach K his due. He is the GOAT college BB coach of all time. I am pulling for HIM to win it all this year and go out on top of his game. Never thought I would say or do that because I dislike Duke so much.
Before I am blasted off of tnet, think as a mature person. As fans we dislike everything having to do with our rivals. And that is what makes rivals. But you have to recognize greatness when you see it. If coach K had spent his tenure at Clemson and had the same success, we would be erecting a life size bronze statue to be placed outside of Coach K coliseum (formerly known as Littlejohn ). Same goes for Nick Saban had he been at Clemson. If Dabo had been at Bama and Nick at Clemson with same results, we would be hating on Dabo. My point is, be adults and give the GOATs their due no matter where they coach.

So, you’ve never heard of John Wooden?

Wooden was already a great coach. Then UCLA got their bagman (Sam Gilbert) and they took it to the next level. Like Barry Bonds and steroids. Was already great but the assistance of others took it to the next level.
Wooden and Coach K can be mentioned in the same sentence at possible GOATs.

The tournament had half as many games in Wooden’s time, he would have had many more eins had there been 64 team tournaments. K is good, great actually (and I hate Duke) but Wooden is the GOAT.

Half as many teams means half as many chances to lose a game. Coach K had to beat twice as many teams to win it all.

Fewer games meant fewer opportunities for Wooden to rack up tournament wins but it also meant it was easier to win titles.

True, but that wasn’t the argument. The OP stated coach K won 100 tournament games compared to 47. It’s easier to win more tournament games when there are double the number of games played.

K had to win twice as many games but the quality of opponent on average is half as good. It's a lot easier to stack up wins against inferior opposition. Nobody is trying to say he is not a great coach. Many just feel that the title of GOAT has gotten thrown around casually in this day and time.

Dilution is the solution. Dilute the tournament quality by adding more and thus, weaker teams to the tournament and the chances to win goes up for good teams.
As far as football, how many CFP wins would Dabo, Saban, and Kirby have if there were 8, 12 or 16 teams instead of 4?

Wooden……10 Championships in 12 years…….7 consecutive Championships between 67-73. It was never done before, it will never be done again. Wooden is, was and always will be the GOAT.

Wooden won 10 out of 12 national titles and nobody will ever do that again. Also, he was playing black kids when Duke wasn't even allowing them on campus. Wooden was definitely the GOAT and it's not even close. To argue that can only mean that you are 30 years old and clueless to the history of the sport.

to call everyone who is any good a “goat.”
It’s so overused, because people think it sounds really cool.
And I’m old enough to remember when calling someone in sports a “goat” was a bad thing. So it’s extra odd to me.

This post made me go look at who the "experts" believe is the GOAT and I stopped looking after the first three all time NCAA coach ranking all said Wooden was #1. Two rankings had Coach K #2 and one had him #3. I stopped looking after the one that had Coach K #3, had Bobby Knight #2.

As we saw with Zion, the shoe company bagmen are the real goats. Would love to see K coach and recruit at Clemson with no one pushing 5* players to him. IMO would be just another coach like CBB

That's a ridiculous hot take. He's undeniably a great coach

He won a title in 2010 with a bunch of upperclassmen with extremely limited athleticism because he was initially against the 1-and dones and didn't want to recruit them.
Plus many great players, including NBA legends, have publicly endorsed his coaching ability.

I don’t like him because he has dominated us but I do give him credit. When he went to Duke their program was below ours. It did not take him 12 years to make a big difference.

The 3 years prior to K becoming coach at Duke
'78 Made it to the National Championship '79 Won the ACC '80 Made it to the Elite 8
My memory is fuzzy these days but I don't remember us doing that well.

Seen he is going for the most Final Four appearances. Yea I don’t care for Duke but the man had a great career. Hoping most was legit but who knows what goes on in college sports anymore. Seen Memphis is being placed on probation because Hardaway gave a recruits mother $11,500. Like I say hope his career was for the most part the real deal.

John Wooden, Adolph Rupp and a few others might argue the point. Goat conversations are always fun, but never resolved.

Difficult to compare because Wooden coached in a completely different CBB environment.
It's a similar argument as Bill Russell. He also won a million titles with the Celtics, which must be acknowledged, but it was unquestionably easier to build and maintain ridiculous dynasties back then. No player is ever going to win 8 titles in a row and 11 out of 13 in the modern NBA. It's just not possible.
The same is true of Wooden winning 10 of 12 in roughly the same era. Wooden was undeniably great and certainly made the most of his opportunity, but it was also an opportunity that doesn't exist in the current landscape of CBB. If Wooden had coached from 1990-2020 he would never have won 10 of 12 titles. It's just a much more competitive environment with alot more parity than back in Wooden's day.
