Why is Clemson not ranked #1?
Oct 3, 2022, 5:48 PM
|
|
We have wins on the road against #15 Wake (who was top 10 at the time) and home against #14 NCST (who was top 10 at the time).
Bama has zero wins against ranked teams. UGA beat one ranked team on a neutral field in week 1. Michigan has no wins against ranked teams. And obviously Ohio St has not played a ranked team.
Someone care to explain? I know it doesn’t matter. But it makes no sense.

Conference affiliation. Not saying it's justified but it's true.

What have we done except 2016 and 2018 that would convince a voter we are better than Alabama? Honestly, until we get to the middle of November, I could less where we are ranked because it means nothing now. Wins and losses count not votes in the polls.

The narrative (hopefully its changing now) has been that Clemson isn't fully equipped. They factor in losing the DC and OC in the off-season as well as having an "off" year last year. Whether that should or shouldn't be a factor, is a different conversation. But the AP will vote alot of the time with underlying narratives. The NCSU win was big in that I think we are back to square one now. WE just need to keep the momentum going against BC and FSU. Two divisional opponents.

Because little ol Clemson has to prove itself every year and I like it like that. Do you think we would have gotten better every week if we started out number 1 ? It's worth pondering. But possibly not. Young folks today are fickle like that. Once they've bought in that they gotta bust their tales if they want to be champions it becomes habit. That's what you want. And whatever works best to motivate our tigers to do that is a winning formula. They're doing us a favor but are too stupid to realize it. Good. If they didn't always doubt Clemson there wouldn't be a ROY bus if ya stop and think about it. It's also the catalyst that lit Dabo's phrases and sayings that we've come to love. Let em keep doubting and we'll just keep showing em we belong.

Clemson is #1

Notre Dame was ranked in the top 10 I believe when they went to Columbus to play the bucknuts.
Michigan is still being gassed up because of what they did 30 years ago and last year making the playoffs. But, the big 10 west isn't that strong. Minnesota is probably the best team over there and they just lost to Purdue at home by 10 and it wasn't that close. Keep in mind; Syracuse beat Purdue. Michigan played it's 1st road gme of the year this past Saturday and had to win an ugly game against Iowa who is struggling in a big way on offense - yet they scored 14 points on the vaunted Wolverines. (Could have been defensive scores; I didn't watch paint dry or this Big 10 game).
Georgia - didn't beat Samford as one would expect. Didn't beat Mizzou like one would have expected. Same with Kent St. Oregon is overrated and they did blow them out and the pollsters remember that. Clemson could not have struggled with those teams and not been dropped multiple spots.
Alabama should have lost to Texas, period! Utah St, Vandy, UL Monroe and Arkansas. I guess Arkansas is that club or maybe they had the SEC-bloated ranking as well. Undecided on that.
Ohio State - the bucknuts got a bunch of credit for beating ND. But, so did Marshall in terms of beatin ND. Marshall actually beat ND worse than the Bucknuts and they played in South Bend. The nuts had them in Columbus. Arkansas St., Rutgers, Wisconsin(who is a shell of its usual self), Toledo(who).
Based on what they have used in previous years: Clemson should be #1. At least, when it fits they used ranked opponents. If Wake and Nancy Stank aren't good - > don't rank them! If the poll is to be recognized as legitimate - don't rank a team that doesn't deserve to be. With that said, "Clemson currently does have the best resume"!

Someone will question: "do you think Clemson could beat Ohio State, Alabama or Georgia right now! To which I would say, "Ohio State and Alabama" probably not right now! Georgia maybe right now; depends on which Georgia team shows up! I believe we could beat Michigan right now!
Putting that out before I am asked.

They were #21 in the AP and #15 in the coaches' poll when we played. Not a top ten team but they might be the best team we play all (regular) season, at least offensively.

We aren’t in the ACC…the year coming off the second natty in 2019, we struggled against UNC in the 3rd week and they bounced our ### from 1 to 4 real quick…UGA and Bama get the benefit of the doubt…anyone who says differently is not smart.

Agree with you that quality wins are a better judge when comparing teams that are undefeated or with 1 loss. But I’ve never understood the importance of what a team was ranked “at the time we played them”. All that means is the initial rankings for that team were wrong. ND is a good example. Ranked #5 when they played O31O State, but not even ranked now. Based on the most recent information, that was not a quality win for the Buckeyes.

why do we care at this point in the year?
Either Alabama or Georgia will have one loss...
Either Ohio State or Michigan will have one loss...
We win every game and we are in the playoffs... that starts this week at BC.
we win two playoff games games and...
we are ranked #1...
It's that simple...
Would much rather be #1 at the end of the season than any point during the season.

Because that's just not how the top teams are ranked at this point in the year

It's still based more on power rankings and a team's ceiling than resume 5 weeks into the season.
I think most people still see a clear top 3 and then Michigan and Clemson a step behind. It's not just the AP and Coaches polls. Check any sports site that does polls.
