Team 1:
Record: 12-8 Road: 0-6 Neutral: 3-0 Home: 9-2 Quad 1: 2-4 Quad 2: 3-3 Quad 3: 1-1 Quad 4: 6-0
Team 2:
Record: 16-4 Road: 3-2 Neutral: 2-2 Home: 11-0 Quad 1: 2-2 Quad 2: 5-0 Quad 3: 3-0 Quad 4: 6-2
Team 2 has beaten team 1 twice this year as well. Team 2 also has less Quad 1 losses, more Quad 2 wins, more Quad 3 wins, and more road wins.
Who is ranked 50 and who is ranked 59 in NET ranking?
Beating a dead horse here I know, but it is thought provoking. All I can think is the weighting system for Quad 4 losses must be way, way, way disproportionately weighted against anything else. Which if you have watched basketball, and understand the variance of the game (especially with the 3-ball in this day and age), seems short sighted.

I'm not sure, just trying to wrap my mind around it, I assume they use it a decent amount since it is a tool created by the NCAA, who also picks the tournament field.

They use the NET to parse teams into quads

And then your record against said quad is the most important element. So if at the end of the year two teams are being compared to one another for a seed their individual NET scores don't matter; it's their records against other teams organized by those teams' NET scores.

Also, look at a team like Boise State. They are 14-5, have no quad 1 wins, they have a quad 4 loss, and their strength of schedule is only a tad higher than Clemson, but they are ranked 21 somehow.
I have to assume that the NET rankings take into account the actual net rankings when looking at a "quadrant". Boise State's quad 4 loss was to South Dakota State, with Boise at home. South Dakota state is NET 161, which is the cutoff for Quad 4 teams when you have a home game. So they must be weighting that loss less than say our loss to Loyola Chicago, who is NET 271, even though they are both still Quad 4 losses.

The Loyola game is a lost cause, but if South Carolina could somehow get up to 240 that would make that a Quad 3 loss and potentially help us down the line.

Iowa is still ranking 39 in NET, even with a loss to 338 eastern illinois....

largely because of the two Quad 4 losses.

NET Rankings are not just W/L

The NET also takes into account things the scoring margin of the games, game control, offensive/defensive efficiency, etc.
Beating VT by 1 point at home in the last minute is probably not any better from a NET perspective for us than it was for VT losing by 1 point on the road in a game they led most of the way.
The loss to Loyola is probably the main problem at this point. Losing to SC was awful, but at least it was close. Loyola destroyed us...it's an 18 point Quad-4 loss. That is an anchor that will hang around our resume all year.

These rankings are a black box. At the end of the day, if they say what the committee wants, they point and say, “well NET rankings quad this and that,” and if they don’t say what they want, well then just ignore them cuz boeheim gets in and clemson gets first four out. Cuz we said and kenpom and road neutral quad 3 win loss by 7.4.
I mean it makes total sense that a first place acc team midway through the season would be a projected 10 seed right? Totally. I bet if unc had done the same as clemson their ranking would be the same, cuz it’s not biased at all! It’s 100% free from human bias! It is!
One thing’s for sure, college of Charleston definitely deserves to be ranked ahead of clemson. They beat va tech! Oh wait . . .

Cut and pasted from the NCAA website:
“ The number of Quadrant 1 wins and Quadrant 3/4 losses will be incredibly important when it comes time for NCAA tournament selection and seeding.”
No team has gotten an at large bid to the tourney with 2 quad 4 losses since the advent of NET. Last year only one team got an at large bid with even a single quad 4 net loss. There is a very persistent voice on this board insisting that these types of losses are normal for good programs. They aren’t. We should be fine if we stay in the top 5 of the ACC but things will get very dicey if we fall any lower.

They kept us out of the CFP.
Could they end up keeping us out of the field of 68, too?
Good grief they must really suck.

Those 2 quad 4 losses were to teams ranked 237 and 244 by KenPom. Those look terrible on the resume. Wish we had a do over on both of those games.

It's easy - 2 Quad 4 losses erases 10 total Quad 1, 2 and 3 wins. Just ask the experts.
