After a Rewatch, My Takeaways

16

Sep 25, 2023, 3:21 AM

After the game, I had about 4 things that really stood out to me. I wanted to go back and rewatch to see if I was right. My review pretty much confirmed what I saw Saturday.

My biggest aggravation was how badly we got out coached at the end of the first half. I have seen lots of venom about play calling, but I don’t typically like to do that. I do, however, have no such hesitation when it comes to less eye of the beholder coaching decisions. In this casethink clock management was critical and was massively tilted in the Noles favor. At 2:49, Briningstool is tackled at the 12. We essentially hurry to line and snap the ball with 18 seconds left on the play clock. Why? You absolutely bleed the clock there. Next play is Shipley for 1, T/O FSU (as it should). The next play is the Shipley reception for the TD. No complaint there, although another running play would have been preferable to me - again to bleed clock.

Now, the tables turn. FSU drives the field, getting to our 11 with 1:20 left after the PI. They run off tackle for short gain and we don’t call T/O. Then they pass over the middle for a nice gain and AGAIN no T/O. Instead of getting the ball back with 1:00+, we get it with :22.

This leads to the most infuriating of all to me. 1st and 10 at our 25 and we run it, followed by a T/O. What? WHAT??? Either you throw the ball or you take it to halftime.

Major advantage FSU on that exchange.

My next complaint was on the FSU drive around 8:00 remaining. Why in the world did Dabo accept the holding penalty when FSU was clearly short?

On the flip side, I would like to point out one area that was notably improved from earlier games was our handling of wheel routes. Duke killed us with it, and FSU tried a few times, but was largely unsuccessful. They had 1 chunk play early in the 4th, but believe there were a bunch of inconsequential attempts. Good work by the staff.

My final takeaway, and I believe it has been pointed out by others, but I have been disappointed all season in our lack of pass rush, particularly from the tackles. Tyler Davis in particular does not seem as disruptive as in previous seasons. I love TD and am in no way suggesting he should be replaced, but it seems like we are doing something differently. I don’t know if we are stunting or slanting the line significantly less, but the lack of pressure is noticeable. We really need to address this.

Aside from this game, I am really having a hard time keeping the faith. We are now 3-4 in our last 7 and all 4 were not just winnable, but outright should have been wins. Choking the Carolina game cost us a playoff berth last year, and Duke and/or FSU almost certainly did so for this year. Come on Tigers, stop losing to Clemson!

Excellent points! Several INFURIATING Coaching mistakes throughout the game. Really ridiculous, actually, but it's that lack of experience in the coaches....

Can you imagine the MELTDOWN N. Saban would have with the time mismanagement you mentioned?

Go Tigers!!!

Great review, I’ve calmed down a lot since Saturday afternoon & like you tried to reflect on the game with honest eyes & really after thinking & watching the game again it was one main thing that stuck put to me… I mean sure I could put a lot of what you said, which is true btw, or what others had posted but to me the biggest glaring weakness facing this Clemson team yesterday was the “Clutchness” the prior teams had. Whether it’s Nolan Turner’s game sealing INT against OSU or the T Law TD pass to Etienne on the drive before when we needed an TD to win, or D Watson to Leggett against FSU in 2016, or the 4th Down stop against Louisville etc. Honestly, what’s the closest win that Klubnik had lead Clemson to? Guess you could kind of say against Syracuse last year but he wasn’t asked to do much on that game except hand the ball off & not create a TO. So until Klubnik, the defense, or god forbid one of the kickers gets that clutch play then I don’t think this team is going to build any confidence in close games going forward. Honestly, I felt we were going to lose as soon as we missed that kick & had zero confidence going into Overtime. I know that’s wrong but until this team gives me something to believe in then I’m going to continue to doubt.

Anyways that’s just my $0.02 & I don’t get paid millions of dollars for my thoughts but that’s what they are.

I too had zero confidence going into OT. But, it was because

we just lost Wiggins. Dabo has been snake bitten with injuries for the last two or three years. During our run, we stayed healthy. Very healthy! I told my son when Wiggins went down they were gonna go at whoever took Coleman. .....Not rocket science on my part either....

Agree but think accepting penalty was the right call

Never know what can happen on 4 and 1. A fake would be hard to stop for 1 yard. Hard count and one of our guys jump results in a first down. Seems to me accepting the penalty was a risk but removed the most risks.

My butt hurt cane on 3 rd &1 in the OT and Dabo and his brilliant OC call a read option and “ assume Cade knows to hand it off” . Reality??? Just call a locked run get the first and a new set of downs. What a total fail. That’s little league. Dabo proved to me even after all the success , that his game management just isn’t there. Just no attention to details. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I agree. That was a huge mistake. We needed less than a yard and he makes a throw to the sideline. Can't imagine what Klubnick was thinking. Make it a run instead of RPO.

After the Duke game, I was watching some review of the game and the analyst (I think it was Mark Richt) pointed out that really don’t have a short yardage play. In the past, we trusted our QB to get a yard, but now we rarely go under center and everything we do run is gimmicky or slow developing. That comment has stayed with me and he is dead right.

To me, I would like to see a jumbo package or a Mafah/Quadzilla wildcat play. Whatever, it is a huge problem that needs to be addressed.

Cade is smaller than the other QBs we used to have to sneak it. He usually gets stoned on the inside runs.

I would love to know how the coaches self assess the game in retrospect. Do they take a devil's advocate review and honestly look at their decisions?

A quarter of an inch and the puck would have went in, but another quarter and we would have missed all together. - Mighty Ducks

I appreciate hitting the post but I want to score.

This is a good question. I know they self scout during bye weeks. It seems like we should do this continuously. We have a staff of 62 (look it up)!!! It seems prudent to have someone evaluating areas for improvement. Heck, it seems like we should work a deal with other teams to scout each other so you have unbiased input. I know we do working sessions with other teams in the offseason. Why not during the season?

I am OK with the refusal to decline the holding penalty since it gave them third down and 25 from inside their own 10 yard line – it was a field position play.

Otherwise, I think your critiques are the most salient I have seen on this bored.

Good analysis. It comes down to our coaches get paid a lot of money. But they are slow to react and really aren't that game smart. Example, Dabo comes off the field at the half and is interviewed and the first thing he says is we shouldn't have been in a three-man front. This is after FSU takes about a minute to come down and tie the game. Well ####, why didn't you know that 5 minutes ago like everyone in the stadium knew it and change it? Hell, call time out and change it if you have to.

I think we have some coaches that never should have been given their positions. And Dabo is having to get in the weeds calling plays instead of doing what a Head Coach should be doing during the game like managing the game and clock.

Good point about the wheel routes. That killed us over and over against Duke. But against FSU Barrett Carter was smothering those routes. I guess he got coached up after Duke or maybe he really is just in better game shape now?

Let me know when you apply for Dabo's job...

Obviously, they did not get the end of the half right.. valid observation on clock, you did not mention getting slaughtered in the prevent on 2 plays on the last drive... what did we give them 60 yards on 2 plays, I think we rushed 3...

If you are going after the end of the half, I thought the D gave up on the play when they thought they had Travis stopped... he did not get the memo and kept playing... should have been 11 players on him...

There were lots of positives in this game, we did not finish... gotta finish.
