It’s a shame that our favorite Clemson fan has missed this great era of Tiger football.. Jim Phillips we all miss you... especially on game day.
Can you imagine how thrilled he would be to have been a part of Clemson and Dabos rise to the apex of college football?

It was a play we had inside the 5... something and goal with Willie Simmons at QB. It was a bootleg and Willie had a wide open running lane into the endzone. I remember Jim saying something like "Simmons will waltz into the end....... oh my goodness he threw the ball and it goes through the receivers hands" and there was about 10 seconds of silence.

Hard to believe, but as far away as I live from Clemson, there was a radio station in Greenville that carried Jim’s evening program that I could actually get on my car radio IF I could find the right spot! I drove around this mountain many times looking for that area so I could listen to him. I’m surprised I wasn’t arrested! He was the best

Voice of my youth. Maybe more so in basketball than football because there were more games. Back in the days when very few games were on TV, he was Clemson sports. And then you got to see a little video of the games with him doing the coaches shows.

Without question our favorite Ohio native! Wouldn’t he have loved these games with OSU?

I spent many of a Saturday afternoon listening to Jim Phillips broadcast Clemson football and basketball. My favorite memory.....he was the emcee of a New Year’s Eve party on the roof of our hotel in Miami on 12/31/1981. A wonderful night, a preamble to the game 2 nights later!

Fuller Rides It Off to Brown

"Rides it off"--I miss that phrase. I was at Clemson during the '74-'77 seasons. I loved listening to Jim during our away games. He still made it exciting even though we weren't that good. He would have LOVED what we have now. It's hard to believe, but on those teams, I doubt many of the players would have made our current team and fewer still would have started. Bennie Cunningham would still be a starter and excel. The Bostic brothers would still play, Jim Stuckey and Jerry Butler. Besides that I can't think of a starter from those days that would have played much on our current team. Dabo has built a machine."Trevor rides it off to Travis--Goodbye." Yep, I miss Jim Phillips!

Yes! “Takes out” and “rides it off” were down the line option play by play calls. He used “off to the races” too, especially in that 78 Maryland game. I liked the way he said “yard line” - nobody else says it that way and so everybody else says it wrong! Even Keith Jackson.

Ohio Natives became Tigers!

Jim ( The voice of the Tigers) was a friend of my fathers and were both Ohio natives. My Grandfather was the Tri County Engineer outside of Columbus for 20 some odd years and so named a road outside of Columbus after his son's University "Clemson Plaza". They always laughed about and the quiet brainwashing campaign. Although we had fantastic 50 yd seats the stadium was not so full and no upper deck. When Dad was busy Jeff and I would go to the games with his dad and sit out side the booth while he called the games. Jeff grew up wanting to be an announcer and even tried it on a smaller scale for baseball games as he played baseball for Francis Marion. We grew up playing on the same basketball team for most of my childhood. Spent many days over at Phillips and terrorizing his little sister Teri. His dad always had time to tell stories to you and as a kid that meant so much. He had a picture with Howard Cossel sp up in a press box. So I new as a kid Mr Phillips was a very important man! It was great growing older and going to Clemson and hearing his voice on the radio. He was Clemson radio.
Jeff, if you are on here let me know! I am the salty kid that moved away to Saudi Arabia! I wont say my name on here.

As a kid back in the day, I used to love to listen to Phillips broadcast games on the radio. He had a way of making you feel like you were sitting in the stadium. Clemson wasn't on tv very much at all back then.
