I've been drinking bourbon and some whiskeys since 1979 and

have not found it habit forming at all... Not many people I knew were drinking it back then. Now a whole lot of people are drinking it and they are talking about it like the Scotch drinkers did and still do. Now there is a supply demand problem today which is making some bourbons/whiskeys not worth their price. I sometimes pay more than I should at times.
A few of my affordable favorites: Henry McKenna ($19.99 for a handle) Angel's Envy Knob Creek Buffalo Trace Wild Turkey 101 Bulliet Belle Meade I wouldn't turn down a Jack Daniels or George Dickel either. Maybe my taste buds are gone, but it still is wonderful to have that end of the day drink (or three).
I don't claim to be an expert as I am probably more of a highly dedicated amateur, kind of like Bobby Jones with golf.

Don't agree with the list. Some good bourbons listed, some bad ones and some very good ones left off. But that's only opinion and everyone has one and that's why there are a lot of bourbons made and sold.
To each his (her) own.

It's all very subjective of course, but I don't find much in common between my list and that one.
I've never splurged on anything real expensive like a Pappy. There are plenty of affordable bourbons I like a lot.
I do like Four Roses, the small batch, a lot. I see they have the single barrel #1...see below for my comment on that. The yellow label is not bad either but not really a sipper for me.
My current rotation is mostly Buffalo Trace and Elijah Craig small batch. Buffalo Trace is funny...it can be hard to find, and the place I usually get it only allows you to buy one bottle at a time. Yet it's almost cheap...I buy it regularly for $22-23.
When I am splurging on bourbon, Angel's Envy or Four Roses single barrel are go-tos. Those are about $38-40 here...that's a "splurge" price-point for me.
I did see Michter's on the list and that's one I've heard good things about but haven't yet tried. It's another $40-ish bottle locally.

Gen Jack, if you like Buffalo (which I do), try Eagle Rare. It's made by Buffalo Trace and is the same mash bill but aged about 10 years instead of 7. It's a little smoother and tastier than Buffalo. It's harder to find than Buffalo and around $10 to $12 more, but I think worth it.

Appreciate the recommendation. That's one I've read good reviews on, but you're right, I don't see it often in the store and just haven't pulled the trigger on it yet.

Had many of my favorites, I would have the order different though.
Blanton's at 10 is criminal. Everyone's pallets are different, but that is in most everyone's top 5, and top 3 for many. Wellers is great, owned by the same company even, and I don't know anyone that would put Weller ahead of Blanton's.
Four Roses would be around 10 (not #1...yikes). I didn't have EH Taylor on a recent list but that would definitely be in my top 10.
The Makers Cask strength is pretty good, but Makers 46 is much smoother IMO.

Isn't Weller the same as Pappy, but just doesn't quite make the cut for the final taste test?

Agree completely TigerCC. I like Makers Mark cask strength and 46 but no way is it better than Blantons. To each their own though.

They have a $5,000 bottle listed as number 4, number 3 is $25, number 2 is $40 and number 1 is $40-45. Either bourbon pricing and marketing is wackado, or the writer is or both. The answer is both.

Jefferson Ocean is once of the most gimmicky BS marketing ploys I've ever come across.

Bride gave me a bottle of Pappy. I can't afford to open it. I am a beer drinker, so no big deal.
Bourbon is corn based and secondary is most times rye.
The secondary grain used for the Weller brand is wheat. Can one taste a difference in Weller and Pappy? I am sure an expert could. I doubt us average RedNecks could. Even if we could --- would it be better? I prefer Jack Green over Jack Black, so sure I could not.
