Do we have a hitting coach?

Mar 19, 2022, 7:18 PM

It seems like every batter (except Coop) is dropping their back shoulder. If you swing up, the ball goes up and causes lots of long outs. We need to be swinging for base hits, not home runs on ever pitch, especially with 2 strikes.

Yes. His name is Monte Lee

Funny you talk about the swings. It’s all about launch angle these days. They start talking about it at a young age and use technology (HitTraxx) to keep up with it. It’s HR or bust these days for the coaches that have bought into the garbage.

A friend of mine has a son who pitches for Upstate SC and he told us that last year their coaches were amazed at the batting practice before the game. He talked to us about they knew they could clip Clemson based on watching the BP session before the game. The coaches at Upstate thought the swings had a ton of “holes” and would be easy to exploit. He also said that their coaches don’t talk about launch angle at all. They want line drives.

It’s hard to watch Clemson’s hitting performance last few years.

I wouldn’t necessarily call it garbage , there is a method behind it the issue I see is yes launch angle is a big part of the game now but I think kids are losing sight of maintaining the barrel through the hitting zone on plane at the same time worrying about launch angle… which in my opinion is why you don’t see a lot of hard hit balls by us for long stretches until we run into a few HRs, which are even down with this team so far … it’s a fine line and I’d rather see us start worrying about squaring balls up right now and HRs will come… sucks watching this for sure and hope we can get it turned around but I’m not super optimistic after the last two games agaisnt pitching which I read was not supposed to be all that great from Miami

Had a friend of mine that played for Clemson under Wilhelm and had told me a college coach he had spoke with said the same thing about our hitters. I did not ask who it was but it is sad that our own coaches do not see this trend and try to get it corrected.

This has been my question for years. As a team I would guess we hit around .240. I’m sure someone knows the number but it isn’t good.

this year???

Mar 20, 2022, 2:57 PM

or overall? because we have 5 guys hitting .300 or higher. we also have two that are hitting very close to .400

Todays game sucks compared to the past. Monte Lee teaches launch angle and he swears by it. My take is simple. They think everyone should hit like Aaron Judge or Josh Donaldson or Joey Gallo. Hit 220 with 40 home runs and 200 k’s. Problem is no matter how good some of these clemson hitters may be odds are maybe one or two might make it to the big leagues.

Stop teaching these kids all or nothing. I’m sure we have kids on this team that can fly. Put the ball in play and let your legs do the rest. Make the defense get you out. We put the ball in play for outs maybe 10-12 of the 27 outs per game. Not gonna cut it.

We can’t keep moving the fences in and hoping we can create 270 foot fly balls that will go over the fence.

Need a hitting guy for sure that can teach a kid to develop his god given gifts while waiting for the power to come with maturity.

Monte has too big of an ego and won’t listen to anybody. Why he keeps the same crap staff every year. Kids don’t develop and actually get worse.

Seth Beer (example one) and Grice now an easy out because teams know how to pitch him and he doesn’t have a coach who can help him make adjustments.

Every year same BS. Top 10 recruiting class amd no one develops here.

Coach with a legion coach locally and good friend of his coached at clemson and said development isn’t good at clemson. Example beer and now we seeing it with grice.

I feel like they need to take Grice out of the pitching rotation to make sure he can hit. My guess is there is just too much on his plate and it will show in either the pitching or hitting due to the time commitment to do either really well. Or make him a full time relief pitcher… either way. He has power for days, but when you’re not seeing the ball well, the power never leaves the batters box. He can be a weapon, but he can also be a liability. If I were playing against him I’m not sure I’d throw anything but curve balls to him.

It’s an entire philosophy. Not just a bat path.

Mar 21, 2022, 8:08 AM

Monte said it yesterday and it made me cringe… he said something to the effect of- we had a couple big innings (crooked numbers) and when that happens you typically score more in those innings than the other team scores all day.

I’m encouraged to see more bunting and situational hitting and I feel that Monte is trying to find the sweet spot where he can play enough small ball to make sure we’re not getting skunked, but the real goal is still the crooked numbered innings.

My argument would be that if you play for 1 run an inning, there are natural pressure spots in the game where you can get those crooked numbers. Ingle has shown what happens if you can just put the ball in play. Blackwell, Brewer, Wagner, and Hawkins have shown they are very capable of doing the same.
