Who's tiny stadium is bigger... Louisville or SMU?

Sep 23, 2016, 9:49 PM

Probably both around 30,000.

SMU's stadium is small on purpose. They played at the Cotton Bowl for 3 decades (capacity of 92,00), after that they were at Texas Stadium (cowboys home before Jerry world). The football program never recovered from the death penalty, but eventually the school built a beautiful stadium that fit the size of their crowds. The two most interesting effects from the death penalty. 1. SMU Admins regained control of their athletic programs and they appear to be dead set on maintaining very tight control. 2. NCAA has never administered another death penalty even though some other programs have had as bad and some would argue, worse offenses. NCAA didn't intend to permanently maime what had been a proud program, but that was the end result. Because of that, I don't believe we'll ever see a death penalty again. For you youngersters, there was a time when SMU had the most feared running attack in all of college football.....and it was something to see.

SMU's death penalty wasn't so much for paying players. Yes they paid players, but but they also lied about it, attempted to cover it up, refused to cooperate with the NCAA in its investigation, attempted to payoff, manipulate, and persuade potential witnesses to lie for them, and they continued to cheat while they were on probation and being investigated for cheating.

100% correct. Still, NCAA didn't intend to make them a doormat for 30 years. They turned SMU into Vandy. If the NCAA repeated that a few more times with top level teams, (candidates that come to mind) Miami, Ohio State, Penn State, FSU, Auburn, Baylor, USC, they would've killed the goose that laid the golden egg. The long term negative effects that the death penalty had on SMU, scared the NCAA. Too much money at stake, NCAA knows who is buttering their bread.

Miami/Baylor was worse.

Even more worse was UNC.

Worst and most deplorable in history...Penn State.

Guess the death penalty was one and done.

Stadium capacity smack?

Sep 23, 2016, 11:09 PM

LOL. Seen it all now. PJCS as of now seats 55,000 and after this season, construction begins on closing in the open endzone and expanding the weightroom taking the capacity up to 65,000. That's 65,000 chairback seats. If all the bucket/chairback seats were removed and replaced with metal bleachers like your stadium has, it would probably seat close to 80,000.
