Transfer portal = no QB depth.

I can't think of any team except UGA that has a "quality 2nd string QB."
Utah is now playing a true freshman walk on who has not thrown a pass all year. Pitt started a freshman QB who had thrown 30 passes all year. Bama has a true freshman with virtually no playing time as Young's backup.
I have no idea who Ohio State has, but with Quinn Evers transferring I'll bet is is someone who has no quality PT either.
The days of Brice Chase coming off the bench (or DJ last year) and playing a vital role are in the mirror.
Just one of the unintended consequences of transfer portal, I guess.

Good players, whether just in their mind or real, will no longer go to a school and work their butts off to sit on the bench. Do you blame them?

This would mean an injury to the starting QB would basically eliminate all chances of making the playoffs or winning a conference. Football can get dirty. Wonder how long before some scum bag starts a bounty. I wouldn’t put it past people and kids these days.

Make no mistake, almost all of the good players entering the portal have already been in touch with the coach of the team where they will end up--either through open recruiting or direct contact by the player.

This may be true of the "good" players, but I read an article last week that stated that 27% of the players that have entered the portal since August have received offers. Sorry, no link. I'll look at my history and see if I can find it.

True. They need to understand that “the backup” is a key component of the team. Being the backup can also be quite lucrative. Our very own “Clipboard Jesus” played over a decade in the NFL, and was able to retire healthy and unscathed.

He wouldn’t have made it to the nfl as a back up unless he was a starter in college. That’s the problem. These kids know if theyre on the bench. They will never make it to the nfl. And they are all chasing that nfl pipedream.

Matt Cassell and Jay Schroeder also. We're career backups at USC and UCLA, worked out pretty well for them I would say.

Brad Johnson lost his starting job to Casey Weldon. He went on to a successful NFL career. Casey went on to success, but not in football.

sheer stupidity soon enough to be relegated to the trash heaps of inanity.
They relaxed the rules "to make the game more athlete-friendly," so the excuses went. How utterly irrational and ill-conceived of an idea! Foolish...just foolish!

We should consider running a 2 QB system since we really only have a few tough games each year. That way both get exposure.

Sounds crazy but I get what you’re saying.

The real trick is to keep moving pro QBs through you’re system on an every other year basis and somehow talk your QB into staying the full four years. That way you guarantee two years of learning and then two years of starting.

QB is the one position where only 1 player can play at a time. Few high rated players are going to want to sit...so they may sign with you but if they lose the job, chances of them going in portal due to no sit out penalty is going to be high.
Elite program may have to consider signing 2 and 3 star QB's to get on roster hoping they would prefer to be a backup at Clemson than a starter in Southern Conference, etc.
The portal needs a solution. The one year sit out rule needs to be put back in place.
Otherwise, this is the wild west. And at QB, it's like the California Gold Rush. Nuts.
