Dabo Swinney on Playoff expansion to 12 teams: "I'm not for it...Our team isn't for it"

Head coach Dabo Swinney loves the differences between college football and the NFL, and one of those differences is that in the college game, the regular season games matter. If the sport moves to a 12-team College Football Playoff, he thinks it will have negative consequences on the game. Full Story »

I'm not for it, and it will take away the importance of not losing more than one game in a 12 game season. It will continue until the post season becomes like the bowl game that mean absolutely nothing. Win 6 games, and you can play for a NC, that would really SUCK!!!!

I love FB, but I love great teams playing to see who is better at the end of the season even more!!!

Well just like he said, there are not enough good teams to put 12 in the playoffs. Basically saying that you are just wasting the efforts of the teams that do belong.

I like Dabo's thoughts about the game is won in the trenches and he is correct, there are not enough big me annually coming out of HS to field NC caliber teams. He always gives a perspective that I hadn't considered.

Didn’t We just lose in Playoffs to a team Dabo had ranked 11th in his submitted poll?

I get Dabo's points but fail to understand the NFL thing. Regular season games most certainly matter in the NFL because not all the teams make the Playoffs. Nothing wrong with the 4 team system we have now.

Regular season games don't matter if you are already 10-0 and division winner knowing you are going to conference championship. Why play your starters for the next 2 games. So just like the NFL, the starters just sit and watch because it doesn't matter if you lose. I don't understand why its so hard for people to understand that as it is, the season is a playoff, every game matters. 1 loss and you may not get in. 12 team playoff, you can be a 3 loss team but conference champion and still get in.

It completely changes the dynamics of the season. Look at MLB, 163 games or whatever it is now, who cares if you lose 10 games in a row if you are still division leader. Professional baseball sux because every game doesn't matter. That's why they only have 20-30k people in the stands. Cut the season in half, make the season more important. MLB is the extreme but it's exactly what Dabo doesn't want.

Doesn't do the fans any justice for viewership either if they paid several hundred for tix and the starters are sitting because they are already into the Conference championship game.

all its going to do is lead to more games

like last year when we played notre dame at full strength ..was a matter of time before the big bowls didnt step in though..the rose bowl in a non play off game year is utter pointless

That was well said by Dabo. I have always felt exactly the same way on all of his points regarding a playoff expansion. An expansion will mean a watered down regular season with more on the student athlete’s plate for no good reason. However, I do feel a 4 team playoff is necessary to do determine a champion in some seasons.

The 12 team playoff doesn't even work with at least some bye teams and that's just dumb. I'm even half way OK with 8 teams, but 12 just doesn't work right and that's a lot of extra games. Of course, they are all about to become pros anyway, so making them play more isn't too terribly wrong.

Six teams should be the max for teams that some may have believed should have been in over another. If 5 and 6 can hold their own in a 6 team playoff, well good for them. But we will still have pretty good playoff teams with just 6 decent teams, and the best two will rise to the top!!!!

My problem with this site is the people that down voted us should be man enough to at least tell us why they took the time to vote down.

12 as a number doesn't even work well. Do the #### math yourselves downvoters and then tell me why you didn't like our posts like a man.

I agree that there simply are not 12 teams in football that should be in a playoff. Football is different than basketball and baseball. 6 teams in the playoff is probably too many also.

More games?

Jul 20, 2021, 6:49 PM

If we are really not wanting to play more games...then why aren't we cutting the regular season to 10-11 games? Or cutting out Conference Championship games?

Idk about yall but OOC schedule limitations have me EXCITED about the playoffs. If the "additional games" are an argument then easily cut down 1-2 games.

I wasn't on the board when the NCAA granted a 12th game so not sure if it was welcomed or hated but we get 6-7 home games a year and as of late most of them have been done by half time.

We are now at the point of having to schedule games 10+ years in advance...10+ years!

Conferences are gonna ebb and flow with strong teams but dadgum some of the bellyache here.

Bowl games USED to provide some interesting matchups and now we have players opting out the moment the team is eliminated.

Best to embrace what is ahead and get with the times. Bring on the additional playoff games and give us some more flavor vs the same ol, same ol.

about this on social media.. they could expand the playoff to the top 25 gets in and the wormtuggers still wouldn't sniff the playoff. they should worry about consistently beating vandy kentucky and tennessee and mizzou and less about getting in the playoffs or beating Dabo. Neither of those last two are going to happen anytime soon.

Seems to me this 12 game playoff (which I don't favor) is an attempt to get the best teams to play one another. In other words, if your conference is weak, if your OOC games are suspect, this is meant to put the good teams in a 'second season' playing one another.

The idea can make some sense of course but it isn't that simple. Should a team that won their conference and be ranked #1, 2 or 3 go out early with a playoff loss? Should the extra games lead to injuries so again, a so far perfect season blows up when the QB goes out in the first round?

In my view I have not yet seen a playoff year where even the #4 team deserved a shot at the title. So 12 - no way. But while we have enjoyed a relatively easy path to the playoffs in some years this is the result.

If you are a fan of college football for more than a few years you know that every team with a great year or a great decade has a ton of detractors that have an excuse for everything your team achieved. ACC is weak, the refs, etc, etc. These arguments are to be expected and this expanded playoff doesn't do a thing to change that.

I can understand the occasions when a typically top team like OSU believes they should be in the mix. But the great thing about the way it has been is that it demands near perfection. You blow your entire chance with one bad game. But to play devil's advocate - we lost to Syracuse and then to Pitt in past playoff years.

So bring 'em on and we'll knock 'em down. That's what champions do.

“…to be honest with you, I don't think there's 12 teams good enough.”

That’s the key phrase right there. Once you get outside the top 3 or 4 there is a pretty severe drop off in competition. The football will be pretty bad. And then there is the inevitable upset that will result in a #12 going against a #1. Who wants to watch that?

This is about money. Period. Not enough teams. Too many games. Same four will still be in finals. Blah blah blah. Money. That’s all this is about. An estimated 1 BILLION dollars in network ad money for a four team playoff in 2019. Do the math. All other points are senseless. Those final four games could be played with the scout teams and it wouldn’t affect the ad dollars. Period.
