The big question I will have in a couple of years is how much of an impact this will have on the graduation rates of college football players particularly those who enter the portal. The current rules are not fair to the schools, those that donate money to pay for scholarships or the coaching staffs. I also have a feeling it is hurting more student athletes than it’s helping. Just my .02.

A close friend of mine in college baseball told me yesterday that over 100 players have entered the transfer portal in college baseball since the end of fall practice.
For most teams fall practice ended within the last week and not all teams are even finished yet.
I completely agree that this will hurt the players more than anything, but it is also unfair to the programs that kids can bail during a time when no recruiting can be done to help fill their place on the roster.

Agreed. The only spot I see where guys got confused on their initial assessment of playing for Clemson is where they fell in love with the University and us playing for Championships over how they would feel playing within our scheme. Maybe they thought it would sort itself out but them and our coaching staff missed that mark. I am sure covid and what all has followed put this under a microscope, for those who signed up beforehand.

You combine whiny west-coast athletes, AA lawyers who want kids with no potential to "get paid" and liberal politicians too scared to say "no" to something with a majority-minority-based push.
The portal started with West Coast BB players in California. Once it was approved in CA, states who's recruiting sucks (FLA for instance) adopted the idea quickly (large AA athletic population in the state) in hopes of getting a leg-up in recruiting.....
Well....then SC followed suit and here we are.

Eliminating the "sit out" rule is exactly what opened the flood gates.
The NCAA finally got tired of defending law suits filed by a bunch of kids suing for immediate playing time after transferring to other schools.

So far I haven't been bothered by the ones that transferred out. With Tchio it sounds more like he was probably being recruited by other schools. We all knew this portal was going to create free agency and that recruiting wouldn't end on NSD.

other people's kids.
my daughter is about to finish her 3rd semester in the Nursing program at Clemson. It is a very hard program to get into and he has had a 4.0 the whole time .
Now she wants to "transfer portal" out of nursing into another major because they will force her to get one of the man made covid vaccines.
Thank goodness they dont have a nursing board on tnet.

That absolutely blows. I'm so sorry for her. "Covid" is a new 4 letter word for me. I'm sure she will excel in anything she puts her mind to. COVID!!! COVID!!! COVID!!!

Yep. Most of these kids were stars in high school, told how great they are and chased by recruiters. Then they come to college and with coaches making millions while they ride the bench and see themselves and their teammates getting trashed on websites. Loyalty? Who's keeping promises?

just because these kids enter the portal doesn't mean they leave school. They have to stay academically eligible.
I know kids in my highschool who moved and suddenly ended up on the rival hisghchool's football team.. dont recall if any ever did it mid season. DOnt think anything could stop them.

That I don't like the outcome (though I do imagine it will calm down after a few years of seeing the fallout), however it doesn't make it the wrong rule. Players should be able to move on when they see fit, just like I can at my job.
With that said, I do think there will be some changes made to your benefits once you check out. Right now most teams are treating it like a sunk cost, but I imagine as teams and players see how all of this plays out that might begin to change.
I do think this fundamentally changes college football, and in my estimation likely not for the better. However, it doesn't make it the wrong thing to do to give players some power to determine where they want to be.

I hate the portal, but Clemson HAS to start utilizing it....

and/or combining that utilization with other roster management strategies.
WE CANNOT SUSTAIN OUR SUCCESS OF 2015-2018 BY DOING IT THE SAME WAY AND NOT ADAPTING.......we've been decimated by the portal the last 3-4 years and not replacing them in some way...OTHER THAN WALK-ONS will continue to hurt us..IE:
through the portal through over signing (knowing natural attrition happens) being so stringent on our offers

these kids who use the portal to transfer multiple times ever manage to graduate.
It seems these kids would be less likely to graduate which ultimately impacts a schools GSR rating.

Calling anyone who transfers a quitter is ridiculous.
Nov 9, 2021, 4:15 PM
|
|
Sometimes, a player doesn't develop like he thought he would (or was told he would). Does this mean that he should continue to work his tail off and never get to play, even though he could transfer somewhere else and thrive?
Sometimes, a player isn't treated fairly by a coach or teammate, and feels that the situation is irreparable. Why should he stay?
Sometimes, a player has an academic issue which can be rectified by transferring elsewhere. Why shouldn't he pursue that?
Sometimes, a player has a family issue and needs to be closer to home. Why should he stay?
And sometimes, a player has a personal issue and needs support/help that he can't get at his current school. Why shouldn't he get the help he needs?
Regardless, a player's athletic scholarship is a one year agreement, with the ability to renew it for another year, for a total of 5 years. It is not a 4 or 5 year contract. He is free to pursue other opportunities if he wishes.
Remember, these are young men. Their circumstances and interests and desires can change on a whim. I support them in being able to find a better situation for themselves, with the understanding that the grass might not always be greener. Moreover, I don't want anyone here who doesn't want to be here. It's not possible to have a great culture if players are miserable and want to get out but can't.

I try not to care about CFB in these unprecedented times. But I just keep watching and logging in to tnet. Hoping that an old man’s worries don’t matter.
