OT....One night in Vegas

Dec 21, 2021, 12:27 PM

Will be staying one night in Vegas with wife and kids (11 and 13) on our way to California. Will have afternoon and night then driving out around lunch the next day.

Staying on the Strip so if anyone has neat places for dinner or things to do that would be appreciated.

Take a day trip and go check-out the Hoover ###.

It's less than an hour drive and well worth the time IMO.

Have you not heard that Folks are leaving California, not going there.

Well that was a disappointment!

a post that starts " one night in Vegas" and that's it ? :) Agree - hoover ### is pretty cool. The West Rim Grand Canyon glass bridge is amazing, too.

I agree with the Grand Canyon. I drove to Sedona after the Clemson/OSU game in Arizona. I did a day trip to the Southern Rim of the Grand Canyon. There was snow on the ground. I felt like I was walking in a winter wonderland. That day is one of my BEST memories.

We always spend a few days in Vegas around Christmas. It is nice around Christmas, not very crowded. New Years is normally pretty crowded, so we try to get back before New Years eve.

I was there in April and flew back early. I agree on the recommendation on Hoover ###. You can also drive to Red Rock. I would stay at Caesars or the Bellagio. If you are not wanting to drive anywhere, there are plenty of things to look at in the Caesars/Bellagio area. I would not venture out too far on the strip with your children with you. I am not a prude and was shocked at what I saw and smelled. I will say that the strip makes Bourbon street look tame.

Where you’re staying would make a difference in my recommendation.

For just one night, I’d stick to something you could walk to easily. No need to waste time in traffic.

My first thought was "great! we're recruiting an offensive tackle from Nevada!"

There is plenty to do:
Hoover was already mentioned. Grand Canyon is a little far for the time you have. Red Rocks is pretty cool and is a short drive- it looks kinda like Mars and could have some snow on it.

My Son enjoyed just checking out the different themes of the hotels and walked up one side of the strip and down the other just checking out the Hotels. Hardrock Hotel is off the strip but has some unique music memorabilia if they are into that.

There is a little alley between the strip and the Big Ferris Wheel that has some cool places.

Freemont Street is pretty cool for people watching.

Plenty of good places to eat on the strip at most price points. From In and Out Burger to 5 star.

check out the fountains at Bellagio and all the different casions. kids can't go on the floor, but they can go right by it. You can gamble while they sit across from the slots. We took our son when we drove to natty after flying in from Vegas to Phoneix. he was about 9 or 10 I guess, and he loved seeing inside all the casinos and the fountain show.

Depending on your route into Vegas/where youre headed in CA, I'd suggest Valley of Fire Park and Nellis AFB northeast of town. And a detour though Death Valley west of Vegas would be on my list. As for in town, the Bellagio has a pretty epic Christmas display this time of year inside.

Batista's Hole In The Wall is a great little, old school, Italian place not far from the strip; behind The Flamingo.

If your family is into this type of thing, there are easy 1/2 day and full-day kayaking (no whitewater) trips on the Colorado River. They will even pick you up from your hotel. Try River Ratz...Google them.

I am familiar with Vegas; my son lived there for a number of years and we visited twice a year.
It is hard to suggest something that would be best for everybody; it depends upon your interests and budget.

My Vegas list:
- Hotel; prices vary a lot, but get one right on the strip. Limit driving (except for Red Rock).
Cheaper alternatives are the Flamingo, Bally's, Harrah's or the LINQ hotel. Expensive would be Bellagio, Venetian/Pallazo, Wynn, etc.
- Afternoon - I would either drive through Red Rock canyon or take a tour of the new Allegiant stadium (if you are a football fan)
do the other one the next morning.
- Dinner - My favorite restaurant is Delmonicos in the Venetian (a steak place) - quite expensive but good food and people watching.
- After dinner - check out the gondola boats in the Venetian shop area.
then walk down to catch the fountains at the Bellagio. Go inside the Bellagio lobby to look at the seasonal display in the Conservatory. (both free)
- Catch a show - lots of choices but a conveinient one would be "o" (cirque du soleil) inside the Bellagio (reserve well ahead).

Next morning - do Red Rock or Allegiant stadium (whichever one you didn't do the day before)

Alternate
- walk down the linq alley and then ride the high roller. Lots of restaurants if you would rather eat there.

Hope this helps.
