My speculation on Nebraska.

Sep 11, 2022, 3:25 PM

Note: I'm certainly no expert, but I've been following the Coaching Carousel for at least 20 years. (Remember, I found Tnet when I was following the carousel when y'all hired Tommy Bowden.) The process used by administrations to lhire new coaches has changed dramatically in those two decades.

Remember when aTm fired Sumlin in September? Well, it became apparent - months later - that they had targeted and found their replacement (Jimbo) before they fired Sumlin. The process today is schools target a replacemnt and work out everything but the signed contract over a period of months. They reach an "agreement in principle" - then spend weeks working on the minute details.

My speculation is Nebraska has reached an agreement in principle with somebody. I have no idea who. Now, they will just figure out the details of the contract and the timing for the public announcement.

Schools don't fire a coach and then start a national search like they used to. They start their search, find their guy, then fire the coach.

Organizations don't contact a guy, talk to him for a day or two, then offer him a multiyear, multimillion dollar contract. And guys don't make up their mind to accept a multiyear, multimillion dollar contract in a day or two. With that much money involved both sides want a whole lot more details.

The only question is who is the guy? Is he a sitting HC at a top 20 school (Brian Kelly)? Is a a G5 coach with a proven track record? (Billy Napier) Is he an assistant coach? (Shane Beamer) Is he a graduate of the Nick Saban Reclamation University (Steve Sarkesian).

Edited to add: I'm not saying these guys will be contacted. I don't think any of them will be. Just mentioning names as examples of people who fit those categories.

I have no idea. But, I am convinced that when you fire a guy in September you know who his replacement is.

I would doubt it’s beamer as well.

Interesting name. I confess I hadn't thought of him.

1. He would take the job.
2. He has a proven track record.

I have no idea who they will consider. But, they might have trouble getting a really big name to go there.

Freezing in Nebraska sounds reasonable.***

Point of clarification.

I reread my post and saw how poorly worded it was. I didn't mean to give those guys as examples of who thye might call. I meant those guys to be examples of people who have been hired in the past few years.

Sorry.

No doubt Bret. Way too much $$$ involved to make hasty decisions. Some have suggested Urbane Meyer. I think this would be foolish, given his track record. He'll coach for 2-3 years, flame out and leave behind smoldering embers. And, he would be given a lucrative buyout. My guess is a Group of Five coach who's done a good job. Also guessing it doesn't matter who they hire. Lincoln just ain't happening. Very difficult place to get good recruits. Years ago, when the Huskers were in the Big 8, they and Oklahoma were the top teams every single year for 35 years. That is a quarter century in our rear view mirrors. Few remember or care about what Devaney and Osborne did. Ancient history. It would be like Clemson trying to recruit based on what Danny Ford did. Or Notre Dame trying to tell recruits about Lou Holtz. Now the Huskers are in the Big 10. Their administration got what they wanted...more $$$. But they did not consider the unintended consequence...more losses, many more losses. Nebraska should serve as an object lesson for other programs. Seems like Texas and Oklahoma are not paying attention.

Re: My speculation on Nebraska. Jeff Brohm

Jeff Brohm looks like the right kind of HC candidate for Nebraska.

(My preference is that Brohm stays at Purdue, but as a CFB fan dinosaur I still like coaching stability throughout CFB.)

I could see Gary Patterson as a strong candidate.

When Nebraska was on top they pulled a lot of recruits from Texas, and the coach obviously has strong ties there. He also can coach up a defense, which has been missing from Nebraska for a long time.

That's too bad about Frost. I thought it would work when they brought him home.

Nebraska can't do any worse than one winning season the past 5 years. Why not stretch and go for Shawn Clark from App State. This is not his first year of having a competing team in Boone, NC.

Tom Osbourne is only 85. Maybe they can get him back. All kidding aside, he's a legend. His 95 Cornhuskers were one of the best teams to ever step foot on a football field.

Bret ...... there will be all kins of rumors in the coming days and weeks and we won't have any idea which are true. I am going to Lincoln in 8 days and will know several people there who will know what is going on. One is a huge donor to the university's athletic department, has had a 22 seat box since they were built in the stadium and partners with one of the athletic teams on their venue, along with the city of Lincoln. Another friend just sent me a picture of Scott, and some of his buddies (maybe coaches), posing for a photo on the golf course a couple of hours after he had been released. He has a big smile on his face ....... almost seemed like a relief!

If I was in the Nebraska brass I'd look at Jamey Chadwell. Not sure on any coaching ties or anything of that sort, but he's proven he can be successful with 2nd tier and lower talent and runs an offense that could flourish in the Midwest. Not really sure how competitive the Huskers can be without the Osbourne player "enhancement" program but if anyone could make them into something other than a speedbump he'd be the guy imho.
