Just heard on the news that school has been cancelled.......

for Friday in 25 school districts in Michigan due to fears that the world will end tomorrow. What has happened to this country? Also, 13 lucky charms will be place in Time's Square on New Year's Eve to ward off the bad luck that may be caused by the ushering in of the year 2013. One of the lucky charms is a statue of Buddha. God help us, we have lost our minds.

and while I'm sure people noticed that the sun was at a different place in the sky at the same relative time in different places (and many other changes), there wasn't standardized longitudinal time until the British started using GMT in the mid 19th century to synchronize the railroad schedule. Standard world time zones, based on GMT, weren't finalized until the early 20th century. In between, the French (led by polymath genius Henri Poincare), Americans, and British traveled much of the world measuring exact longitudes to accurately measure time. In fact, Poincare's longitudinal maps, along with many patents for clocks sent to his patent office in Switzerland, inspired Einstein's theory of relativity (see Galison's Einstein's Clock, Poincare's Maps).

that time zones were anything other than a human (and relatively modern) construct. That somehow the Mayans were ignorant in that regard.
