I love the South.

I mean, the REAL South, not Florida. Driving through SC today. Decided not to get on I-26 at Newberry, but just stay on 176. We were just gonna pull off at some reasonable spot and snack for lunch, eating the stuff we brought from home.
Between Newberry and Whitmire we saw a small road that said, "Indian Creek Gun Range" and turned in there. Went about 100 feet to a parking lot. Outdoor, public range in the national forest. 4 guys taking target practice. Pistols, rifles and one shotgun. No one there "officiating." Just four private citizens out having a good time.
I talked to one and said, "My wife and I just traveling through and needed a rest stop. Figured we'd be safe here." He laughed and said, "Yep. Anybody pick a fight here and they're gonna lose."

Pretty sure I saw a sign that said "Whitmire National Forest." I knew is was a national forest. We figured there would be some place we could pull off, sit in the shade, eat some crackers and dip, drink a coke, and just relax.
After we got back on the highway within a quarter mile, there was a ranger station, complete wiuth a nice picnic table under a big shade tree.
But, we enjoyed the gun range just fine.

I agree. I am a true "RedNeck Son of the South". I am retired, can live anywhere. I choose here in Upstate South Carolina. Many great folks live not just here, but across the South. Once you get away from big cities in any Southern State (including Florida) you find most folks to be solid. Good Southern folks are also about in the cities, they just don't have the majority.

I agree tugaloo. Retired and actually looked around hunting a retirement spot and decided north Georgia or upstate corner of SC the best. People are just solid. Building a small house above Hwy 11 off of 178. And roaming some in my RV. Staying out of cities

You should’ve driven a few miles out or your way and checked out the Palmetto Trail in Peak. There’s a massive old railroad trestle crossing the Broad River you can walk across there. It’s a great view. When I was there about a year ago I had never seen so many turtles in one spot.

You should have gone through Carlisle, and your opinion of South Carolina might have changed. The speed limit drops from 55 to 35 and the local cop is sitting right at the top of the hill and even if you are slowing down when you cross the 35 sign you are free game. Ask me how I know!

While going to a retirement party in North Chuck, went down Virginia Ave. and there was a line of about 30 Gas trucks lined up to get filled up at one of the tanks. Must be gas from somewhere. Those guys are pulling some serious driving time getting gas to everyone.

Update on gas in Roanoke. Roanoke is serviced by a second pipeline, so after the panic buying was over, the gas stations replenished their tanks, so you should have no problem finding gas. The detour you will have to take will route you by several gas stations.

I miss the south. I've lived in the DC metro area for the last 35 years (most of my life), and I'm ready and hoping to move to the real south really soon.

Well bless you, right deep in the swamp you are for sure. If you ever plan to head back this way you better start looking now. Housing is flying off the market. Selling almost as soon as listed.

Thanks for the heads up. Right now, my goal is to move to Tennessee. Was planning to do some scouting there last year, but didn't want to be traveling about during the C0V1D hysteria. My plan now is to travel there later this year to look around the state.
A good friend of mine relocated to the Greenville, SC area in 2019 after living here in the swamp his whole life (40+ years). He loves it there. I'll consider moving to SC, GA, or NC, but Tennessee is currently my first choice.

Just outside of my home town of Newberry on the Joanna side of Hwy 76 is Wise's BBQ. They make the mustard-based pork BBQ that I grew up on, with a nice side of BQ hash and rice. Man, I miss it!

Between Mount Pleasant and McClellanville on Highway 17 in the Francis Marion Forest there is an open public range. Designed for rifles shotguns etc.! There are even public trails through the Francis Marion national forest for Dirt bikes and four wheelers.
