A little head-to-head comparison to ponder

Nov 29, 2021, 10:31 AM

Team A
Average Opponent W-L 6.2 - 5.7
Opponents @ .500 or below - 7
Avg # of Power 5 Wins for Opponents 3.0
Currently ranked teams played 3

Team B
Average Opponent W-L 6.6 - 5.2
Opponents @ .500 or below - 7
Avg # of Power 5 Wins for Opponents 4.1
Currently ranked teams played 4

Team A = Georgia
Team B = Clemson

My point? I don't know. Draw your own conclusion. Is UGa that good at 11-0? Certainly being undefeated at all is no easy task, but they have only played 3 teams that have 5 or more wins against Power 5 opponents (Clemson, Ark & KY - which are their only 3 wins over currently ranked opponents). Certainly UGa is a great team this year, but are they are they're being cracked up to be? Schedule would say maybe not. They obviously get points for "SEC wins" even though Clemson has played more currently ranked teams than UGa.

There are several "UGA isn't that good" threads here. Kudos to you for actually crunching numbers on it. Maybe the Dawgs are overrated and not really that good. We'll begin to find that out Saturday afternoon.

I don't think this UGA team is elite like 2018 Clemson/Bama

Nov 29, 2021, 10:47 AM

or 2019 LSU, etc. But that doesn't matter. You just have to be the best team this season. UGA is certainly the best team this season. Will you win it all? No idea. But UGA is clearly the best team right now. Just gotta finish the job.

Imagine if UGA gets a really good QB. The SEC east is so terrible that it doesn't really matter. But UGA with a really good QB would be elite.

Yeah, the SEC East is so terrible they've actually lost 3 of the 7 games they've played against the ACC this year. :)

We would also be elite with an above average QB. Super Elite with an outstanding QB.

This years version of Bama ain't your typical Bama...

Nov 29, 2021, 10:49 AM [ in reply to Re: A little head-to-head comparison to ponder ]

especially along the OL and in their secondary.

Bama's OL just isn't that good this year and certainly not what we are accustomed to seeing from them
The unit ranks near the bottom of the league in sacks allowed. The RB's only averaged about 4 yards per carry this season which also looms toward the bottom of the SEC. Their DB's rank in the middle of the pack in the $EC in passing defense.

Chalk it up to looking ahead to next weeks match-up in the SECCG if you'd like, but Bama absolutely got outplayed by a .500 Auburn team that lost to uof7c a week ago.

I think it is maybe 2 cases if looking ahead. Auburn losing to SC looking ahead at Bama and Bama playing Auburn poorly looking ahead to SEC championship game. I still think Bama just might beat GA twice.

The UGa defense will have a field day against the Bama OL***

There is another dimension . . .

Nov 29, 2021, 10:53 AM [ in reply to Re: A little head-to-head comparison to ponder ]

It's a keen observation to notice such numbers, and I'm not saying they don't matter, but we have to remember that strength of schedule is really a "potential" reflection of a team's quality, not a *definite* reflection of it. What I mean is this. Let's say we have a team . . . call it 'X,' and let's stipulate that X is a fantastic team. Maybe even historically fantastic. But let's say their SOS is 130th. Well, so they beat up on a bunch of nobodies. But we already stipulated that they're top flight, so we can't render that SOS overly negatively. So, the fact that their SOS is bad does not change their quality, it just means that their resume can't tell us as much.

When it comes to Georgia, it **might** arguably be the case that they aren't *quite* as good as the average bear thinks they are based on record and average margin of victory, but over the course of a whole season, you can also tell a lot by consistency and the quality of play, even if the opponents, on average, aren't all world-beaters. With Georgia, watching them play week after week, they look darn good. I'm not sure that they are overrated, but if they are, then I tend to think it is only marginally so.

UGa is definitely a really good team this year

Nov 29, 2021, 10:53 AM [ in reply to Re: A little head-to-head comparison to ponder ]

But are they the unbeatable powerhouse they're being made out to be by the media? I don't think so, but time will tell. A win is a win, and as we've seen this year, they're not guaranteed by any means, no matter who you are! Yes, we played them closer than anyone this year, but that was also the first game for each team, and neither team really knew who they were yet or where there strengths were. I think both Clemson and UGa have improved as the year has gone on and a rematch would definitely be interesting, but it's obviously not going to happen.

UGa's toughest 2 or 3 games are still ahead of them, so we'll see how they can handle the pressure and the competition given that they've only really been challenged once this year, and that was the first game of the year - many weeks ago.

Alabama has to be the single most overrated team in all of college football. UGA will destroy them. Hopefully the natty stays in the south.

would love a bone head call to cost them a title.

I dont think they are overrated. Their defense can win them 98% of games. I am very interested to see what happens if they actually meet a team that can score 21+ on them. If that even exists this year.

Bennett concerns me. He gets away with a lot of bad throws. Last year Bama got after him and he didn't play well under pressure. I do think he has the benfit of having a defense that will keep him from having to score 30 to win.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're stats are missing a key component

Nov 29, 2021, 11:19 AM

They've won all of their games.
And none of them (except against us) have been close.

They look dominating, and of course that will be tested this weekend, but they deserve every ounce of the credit they are currently getting.

Their defense is elite

Nov 29, 2021, 12:00 PM

College football nerds (formerly sec fans) on the ewetoobs has a good formula of defense vs opponent average. Teams average 50% rushing vs Uga.
What can beat Uga is a team with a similar defense, like Okie St. they gove up about 58% of rushing avg.

But a team with a great offense can be stymied bu Uga’s rushing offense, like what Mich did to Ohio St.
but a team that can shut down Uga’s O, can beat them in a toss up game.

Uga is really really good with a great defense. It is their national title to lose at this point. Would love 1980 to "keep on living" but I just don't see them losing to anyone this season. Oh what I would pay to see our last NC team play this years Uga team.
