The population of Pickens County would likely be a good bit higher today If he had.

But seriously, didn’t he get a Corvette or something similar to go to Athens? Almost seem quaint now with NIL.

And, his Momma wound up with a new house. I heard the coach who recruited Herschel, I believe it was Miles Arledge, tell the whole story on the radio (maybe Dan Scott's show?) years ago. He told all about the Trans Am and the house, and just said "things were done a little differently back then".

Herschel's high school every week, and we were right in the thick of it, looking pretty good. On this particular day, when he pulled up in the parking lot at the school, he immediately noticed a brand new black Trans Am, and assumed it belonged to one of the coaches. He found out pretty quickly it was Hershel's car, he said he knew right then that we had lost the battle, and UGA had won. He said that some time after that, after Herschel had already signed with UGA, he rode out to Herschel's home, and beside the old, tiny wood-frame house, was big, brand knew brick house. That's when he commented that things were done a little differently then.

The way I heard the story. Supposedly his momma was taking the clothes to the laundry mat and so a new washer and dryer was purchased for them. The next time the coaches went to see him and came back to town they were asked how his momma was liking the new washer and dryer. The visiting coach said well it goes well in the new house Georgia bought them.

See… even way back then, he was not trans-phobic.

Things like that have a way of working themselves out.

He was the top player in college football, led UGA to the championship immediately, and far outclassed Heisman winner George Rogers, all as a true freshman. Unsure how you define "deserve it".

Legend and rumor has it that Herschel had an uncle who owned a used car lot, maybe sold three or four cars a month for years. After the commitment to the University of Georgia, that uncle’s car lot became one of the highest volume car dealerships in the state. All sorts of high-end vehicles were bought and sold through that establishment. NIL actually pales in comparison to the old recruitment deals like that.

But like I said that’s just a rumor. What do I know? I was just a poor kid in rural South Carolina who enjoyed listening to Clemson football games on the radio and occasionally attending a game.

I don’t think CFB recruitment things have gotten any more or less crooked through the years. Things have just adjusted with rule changes and surveillance/enforcement mechanisms.

In 1979 Herschel Walker was a larger than life college football target as an absolute high school football legend. His recruitment raised the bar for the booster clubs. One can only imagine how motivated Vince Dooley and the UGA supporters were to get him.
