Furman / Clemson story from the early 50’s as told by my Dad

Aug 30, 2018, 4:01 PM

Dad played football at Clemson in the early 50’s. During football practice the week of the Furman game, practice comes to a halt as this bi-plane circles over the practice field dropping leaflets everywhere.
Being wise to what is going on Coach Howard shouts out “Don’t any of you pick up one of those blankety blank leaflets !”
A few minutes later as Howard walked away they naturally picked up and read the leaflets.
They read “Close and lock all barn doors !! The Purple Hurricanes are coming !”
Dad said they were not amused and went out on game day and beat the he!! out of them that much harder than they normally would have !

True Story !

Note: (Furman changed their mascot to the Paladin some time after that)

And old Frank Howard probably paid to have the leaflets dropped.
