The court ruled on Maryland's request to have the lawsuit thrown out and the court has decided the case can go forward. There is still no decision on whether Maryland will have to pay, only that there will be a lawsuit in North Carolina.
We don't even know if the ACC will win the North Carolina lawsuit....then we get to hear what the state of Maryland decides about UM's case.
Long way to go yet.

If I was Mary land, I would say oh well, we don't have the money, so we will just stay. Hopefully then ND will pull everything out the acc if Mary Land had to stay. That would show Swoffy that ND does what they want to, when ND wants to do it. I would love for anything Swoffy touches to go sour. Even a carton of milk.

In hindsight it is a great trade Lville for UMd, but they put the entire conference in jeopardy. All it took was a few more panicking and leaving and the whole thing would have fallen apart.

in the time between receiving the news Maryland was leaving the ACC and time he received confirmation from FlaSt and Clemson that they were staying, John Swofford had to change underwear several times

As is often said in the legal biz:
Nov 19, 2013, 2:44 PM
|
|
"You've won a judgement. Congratulations. Now, try and collect it."
I think the hardest part is yet to come. Maryland's athletic department has long been teetering on bankruptcy. Hopefully, membership in their new conference will provide the increased funds to pay off debts.

Split twelve ways, that's about $4.3 million per school

Unfortunately, Maryland is likely to spend that much and then some in legal fees trying to avoid paying the exit fee. As the result of protracted litigation, it is unlikely the ACC will collect one penny from Maryland in our lifetime.

allowed to proceed. They haven't ruled against Maryland yet.
This will certainly help with any potential settlement, though. Maybe it was $30 million before...maybe $40 million now. Or maybe we'll stick it to them. Either way is fine with me.

One possibility would be....
Nov 19, 2013, 3:35 PM

for the ACC to file a default judgment against them and petition the court to force the BIG to send Maryland's share of the reveune from the BIG to the ACC until the judgment has been satisfied.

This isn't exactly what the ruling was. The ruling in Maryland court was that the case won't be dismissed, not that they have to pay. That will be decided in NC courts. Then probably retried in Maryland courts.

Maryland thought they were special because the state is overrun by Democrats. Their philosophy is they are supposed to receive rather than give large sums of money.
