Unbelievable fact about Clemson, College Gameday & Dabo

Sep 27, 2017, 8:26 AM

1. This Sat will be the 16th Clemson appearance on College Gameday.

2. 14 out of those 16 are after Dabo took over the program.

NOTE: Clemson's first appearance was in 2006 and the 2nd appearance was in 2008, Tommy Bowden's last year.

3. First College Gameday was in 1993.

Let you sink that in a little bit.

How far have we come!

what annoys me is now that we are good we are always someone elses Gameday. How about a little respect for a National Champion and a school that ALWAYS produces a lively fun crowd.

Agree bugs me too. Result of this year's road schedule. If FSU had turned out as expected that likely would have been a home game day.

At Clemson
1. 2006 vs GT
6. 2013 vs UGA
7. 2013 vs FSU
9. 2015 vs ND
12. 2016 vs UL

Neutral Site
2. 2008 vs Bama (Chick-fil-a kickoff)
4. 2011 vs WV (Orange Bowl)
10. 2015 vs Oklahoma (Orange Bowl)
11. 2015 vs Bama (Natty)
13. 2016 vs OSU (Fiesta Bowl)
14. 2016 vs Bama (Natty)

Away
3. 2010 @ Auburn
5. 2012 @ FSU
8. 2014 @ FSU
15. 2017 @ UL
16. 2017 @ VT

So, 5 home, 5 away, and 6 Neutral (5 of which were bowls/playoffs) seems pretty balanced to me.

I wouldn't be shocked to still get GT or FSU if we are undefeated and they are ranked. Also wouldn't surprise me if they went to our NC St if they only have 1 loss (HUGE IF). This is without looking at the other games scheduled those 3 weekends.

Exactly, there is no disrespect here.

Sep 27, 2017, 10:07 AM

The only game to date that was CLOSE to being game day worthy was the Auburn game, and I think any unbiased observer would agree that the Oklahoma/OSU game that day was a more favorable matchup and location.

I also would not be surprised if they looked at the schedule and said, well 2 out of 3 after this one look like we are likely going to see Clemson so they didn't really consider Clemson a realistic choice for week 2. It's not disrespect, it's about creating a watchable show, and Clemson 3 out of 4 weeks would be boring to the majority of college football fans.

As the poster above said, there are still potential games for Clemson to host gameday, but if it doesn't happen because FSU is down and GT is a boring team nobody wants to watch, well that's just the way it goes. In 2013 Clemson hosted twice. It would have been boring except for the second time was in a monsoon so that visual was very captivating.

Gameday has been to Clemson a more than fair amount the last 4 years. But if you want to say that ESPN is "dis-respecting" Clemson, than remember, the last time agameday was here the crowd booed Corso when he picked OUR TEAM. I laughed when it happened, but if you don't think that the entire Gameday crew felt disrespected that day you are wrong. If Gameday doesn't come to Clemson this year, or next year, than maybe we need to look in the mirror.

Gameday is a money maker for ESPN. They're not going to let the fact that the crowd booed Corso for his pick have any influence on a decision to come to Clemson or not. Clemson is a nationally-recognized brand, even to non-CFB fans. I can tell you from here in Missouri, the difference in brand recognition over the past 3 years is significant, if only anecdotally.

Clemson is on TV every week here in St. Louis, as they were last year - only 4 years ago I watched half the games online or had to buy the CFB add-on package. Clemson is fast becoming the 2nd favorite team of a lot more people in the country - the way Dabo runs our program has a lot to do with that. ESPN recognizes that, and if there's a tie between Clemson and anybody else except Bama, USC or another major-market program, we'll get the nod.

Recognize too that a Clemson away game gives ESPN an opportunity to perhaps go to another market they haven't or rarely go to and boost the profile. The ACC is a rising conference, so it's likely they'll see more reason to visit one of the conference's programs. Clemson draws attention - and ratings.

Say what you will about ESPN, but booing Corso is not a grudge they're going to hold against ratings, especially now. It might even be a net positive for a visit. When they come (and they will come), it'll get mentioned with smiles either early in the broadcast, or toward the end when they make their picks and hopefully Corso picks against the Tigers again (crossing fingers).

I don't really believe that ESPN cares

Sep 27, 2017, 2:28 PM [ in reply to Re: Exactly, there is no disrespect here. ]

I'm just pointing out to the people who are always feeling disrespected that it's a two way street.

I honestly believe that Gameday has peaked. They are looking for new ways to grab attention because 16 trips to Ohio State, 12 or so to Alabama and Florida State, these aren't the draw to the public, or even the fans of the institutions anymore. Clemson will always bring a good crowd, but I remember going the first time in 2006, we drove from Greenville and showed up around 6:00. We were barely able to get in the fenced area. Now you can walk into the fenced area at 9:30. The big teams going to the underdog is more of a draw than the same old teams over and over. I know that Clemson has only hosted 7 times, but it's not the same as it used to be.

Fundamentally I think we agree. There is no bogey man at ESPN who hates Clemson.

That is a good thing though. Just like it is a good thing to have your coach listed on job openings because it means you are successful. Would you rather be in SC's situation and not have your coach ever mentioned in any job openings or not know if you will ever have an offense?
