Almost 30% of the ACC is within a 100 mile radius

May 11, 2012, 2:36 PM

This has got to be a killer for TV contract money. Not to mention that UNC, NCSU, Wake and Duke add very little, and in some cases nothing, to the football product quality of the ACC.

Wake and Duke are probably dancing in streets over a $17M/year contract given how little they spend and commit to football.

Every conference has their suck programs...

May 11, 2012, 2:40 PM

In the SEC, they have Vandy and usually UK or one of the Mississippi schools. The ACC has Duke. The Big 12 has ISU, and until RG3, Baylor as well.

Look at the footprint of the ACC. We've got the entire East Coast locked up from Miami up to Boston. Having 4 NC schools doesn't hurt the conference. What does hurt the conference is that no program is performing and winning on the big stage in football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

what hurts the conference is over half of the schools

May 11, 2012, 3:01 PM

have a fanbase you could comfortably fit in Furman's stadium.

Duke
Wake
BC
Maryland
Miami
UVA
GT
UNC (for the most part)
now, Pitt and Syracuse

Yeah, I understand that...

May 11, 2012, 3:30 PM

I'm a Tech alum, so although it bugs me, I know our fanbase isn't large. But I think we do a better job than many of the others on that list, including UNC.

If you look at the current Big 12, after Texas and OU, there isn't much in terms of fans. It drops off after those 2 schools down to stadiums of 60K or less, and I have no idea how often their fans show up disguised as empty seats.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you guys at least show up when you play at Clemson

May 11, 2012, 3:41 PM

most of the other schools you can count their fans on your fingers and toes, the ones that aren't player parents. you guys fill the visitors stands pretty well (plus you bring your band, which I think is important).

I had a Clemson athletic admin tell me one time that Maryland's ticket office sold 8 tickets to a Clemson-Maryland football game one time. EIGHT. TOTAL.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't know that about Maryland...

May 11, 2012, 4:01 PM

That's hard to believe, honestly.

Well, Clemson is our biggest rival in the ACC. And you guys are only 2 hours from us. So, it's an easy trip.

I'd like to see Swofford pushed aside, and then maybe the next commish can put together a divisional format that makes sense instead of the mess we currently have. There's no reason Tech, Clemson & FSU can't all be in the same division.

I've been on this board the last few days arguing vehemently against the idea of FSU or Clemson going to the Big 12. I think I'm correct in saying that move won't happen, and if it did happen, it would be a huge mistake.

But like many, I do think the ACC needs to do a few things to get its act together.

Yep, I love that song they play where we get to join in.***

Here is the 2011 attendance records for the Big 12:

School (Stad. cap.) AVG.
Baylor (50,000) 41,368
Iowa State (55,000) 53,647
KU (50,071) 42,283
KSU (50,000) 49,083
UM (71,004) 62,095
OU (82,112) 85,161
OSU (60,218) 57,229
Texas (100,119) 100,524
aTm (83,002) 87,183
Texas Tech (60,454) 55,347

That's what I thought...

May 11, 2012, 4:12 PM

After Texas and OU, it's a big drop-off. They don't have a Dook/Wake situation. But Baylor/KU aren't super-far above Wake territory.

And now they're losing A&M and Missouri.

Even OSU didn't average 60K, and they won their conference.

Not impressed.

Re: That's what I thought...

May 11, 2012, 4:27 PM

eh..its not too bad. Most teams only missed their capicity by 3,000-5000 people. Majority of teams last season had a hard time filling up their stadium.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's true...

May 11, 2012, 4:40 PM

But these are medium-sized to smaller stadiums. So, not hitting capacity looks worse at that level than at the level of, say, Texas or something like that.

It looks like the remainder of the Big 12 is 2 football powerhouses followed by a lot of mediocrity and medium-sized to smaller fanbases. I don't think it qualifies as a true and deep football conference anymore. When they lost Nebraska, A&M, Missouri & Colorado, that ripped the guts out of that conference.

Re: That's true...

May 11, 2012, 4:42 PM

Texas Tech and Kansas State have a pretty good fan base from what I seen.

to that point though... BC and Miami both have very poor following in football (Miami's is okay but has declined since their golden days... No one IN Miami really cares about the U

Maryland has a decent following as does FSU and VT

Virginia? idk...

Re: Every conference has their suck programs...

May 11, 2012, 4:24 PM

keep in mind also guys..clemson's enrollment is just under 18,000 including grad students and only FSU had a slightly larger stadium than we do....I mean Maryland has 30,000 students and UNC has more than we do. Most everyone does...We have a stadium that would fit right into SEC or Big12 play...says something about Clemson Univ that has such a large following for not such a large school...I went to the orange bowl this year and since it was on week night, attendence was down, but we had more fans than West Virginia did until we started losing...any conference should be happy to have Clemson with their monetary support

You might want to look at Clemson's record against Baylor.
