and only one conference that it makes sense for us to join. That, of course is the SEC. We are in their geographic footprint, and we already play a couple of their teams a year on average. We compete better than most teams that are already there not named Alabama / Georgia.
We used to have a real rivalry with Georgia, that was a victim of previous conference expansion. I would love to get that game back on the schedule every year. Because, it was a true rivalry, you had to work to win that game. If you look further back in history, we played Auburn just about every year, for MANY years, even into the early years of the ACC.
I say Clemson should petition the SEC for consideration as a new member tomorrow, and make Greg Sankey tell us no. If it turned out that the ACC's $40,000,000 buyout was all that was keeping us out of the SEC, I would wager IPTAY would raise that amount in a hurry in a special campaign.

I keep hearing that the SEC already has the SC market with the #####, so why would they add Clemson. Laughable. Clemson addition would be elite. They already have Auburn & Bama. Would be similar as far as tv market is concerned and Clemson is much better as a program obviously.

No one outside of columbia sc gives a flying crap about the pathetic coots. They are irrelevant to the college football landscape.

Plus Clemson would big draw bringing softball, men's soccer and new Gym Tigers into SEC. Other teams have played strong when playing USC UGA and other SEC teams. If Clemson does got to SEC first game should be scrimmage game Tigers and Sooners Cotton Bowl proceeds to support hungry kids in DFW Clemson and Norman. They would fill Cotton Bowl (Dallas) easy setting record and with Cuban's help fill ATT Center with fans watching game their are monitors. Like they did Maverick away games in playoffs.

In this case, "staying patient" IS jumping off the roof.

Very Good Post, couple of comments

1. You are correct that the SEC is the best conference for us, but the BigTen could also work. Being the southern most member, assuming GT or FSU don't join, we could recruit the fertile Florida and southern players that want to play Ohio State, UCLA, Southern Cal, Michigan etc. We would have as much talent as any team in that league. We could also recruit the Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey athletes that want to come south, yet also play their home states. I'd actually rather be in the BigTen if FSU, GT, VT, UNC, etc.
2. I'm concerned we will not get an invite from either. At this point, for anyone to get an invite, they would have to increase the value to the point every school gets more money. That seems to be an impossible task. Maybe a package deal with a group of schools might work. I'm also concerned that the SEC has always preferred getting schools from North Carolina and Virginia in order to truly cover the south. I think the Big would prefer UNC and Virginia also. It does not matter that we are the best program.
3. If we are not going to get an invite, then the only way to stay in the game is for the ACC to not lose any and to get Notre Dame to join in full.
4. As for the grant of rights buyout. I don't know how much that would be, but it might be more expensive to stay and not pay it. Especially if turning down $50 million more a year. In ten years that's $500 million. That's a lot of money to miss out on, not to mention being reduced to a group of five type program. I doubt the GOR will cost that much.

My first call would be to GA Tech. Double rivalry Clemson UGA and Ga Tech UGA. But best SEC package deal is if Clemson Nebraska joins together

Well thought out post. Too many forget about that invite part. Both conferences are looking for leverage to renegotiate/improve that TV package. NC/VA does it for the SEC; Southern schools do it for the BIG1. The BIG1 has proven it will go out of its geographical area. I don’t think the SEC will until NC and VA are off the table.

Clemson fits new SEC or new Big 12 if Nebraska comes back in the adds the Washington and Oregon teams. Clemson in Big 10 won't work cause they screwed Nebraska when they got there and would same to us .

Have to state the obvious would be perfect fit Clemson in SEC kicking OU Sooner butts every year home and away. First 2 seasons. Then later how ever that schedules show. Then Clemson vs OU SEC would become instant top SEC rivalry. Then 2nd biggest rivalry would be start of Tide Tigers. Saban vs Dabo would make record attendance at Bristol Racetrack
