BC exposed a weakness and FSU took advantage.

Oct 20, 2013, 9:21 AM

We couldn't handle the corner blitz and our O line doesn't give Tajh eh ought time to through. Add a mediocre run game and teams playing a Nickle D - and it makes it difficult.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tajh had enough time to throw.

Oct 20, 2013, 9:25 AM

He just couldn't hit any of the receivers.

He didn't have the options he's used to

Oct 20, 2013, 9:26 AM

Lots of the throws were to heavy coverage and it looked like he was throwing in desperation. As best I could tell from the TV angles, FSU almost made no mistakes in covering our receivers.

A run game would have settled down our O last night. But apparently, we don't have one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our running game was just as effective as theirs

We just couldn't outrun their pass coverage.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They didn't need the run game with their passing

Oct 20, 2013, 10:09 AM

We did. Being able to run effectively would have given us a chance and not put so much pressure on the passing game.

He went to Sammy way too many times but when the others drop them or fumble them away what is he to do???

That is the most balls he has thrown in the dirt since the last loss to SC...wide open and in the dirt???

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

NCSU was the first to bring that weakness out

Oct 20, 2013, 9:25 AM

in my opinion.

Come again? Did you see the BC game?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am one if TB's biggest fans.

Oct 20, 2013, 9:38 AM

But don't tell me that they were just covering our WRs... TB was locked into guys all night, no check downs, and forcing balls into triple coverage. If a guy has 2 DBs around him, he isn't open. If he has 3 DBs and you still throw it, you are a moron. I don't know a nicer way to say it.

Are you saying he left unchecked/open receivers a lot?

Oct 20, 2013, 9:43 AM

From what I could see with the TV angles, Boyd didn't have the options he may have gotten used to. Granted he made bad choices and bad throws. And most of them were forced from either perceived or real pressure. It didn't look like we were able to outrun or out maneuver coverage much. It was like their backfield was tethered to our guys.

Re: Are you saying he left unchecked/open receivers a lot?

Oct 20, 2013, 11:20 AM

Yes-

I dont coach college football, but to me, I would rather take a 1v1 matchup with Mike Williams than a 1v3 with Sammy. It all comes back to taking what the D gives you. I admit, they werent giving much, but you cant triple team a WR without leaving something open. From what I saw, I think the screens were there more often than not.

Here is another thing... If you arent going to use your RB in Max-protect, throw him the d@mn ball, he is open. A lot of forced throws last night.

I agree. But it makes me wonder if it's Morris play calling

Oct 20, 2013, 11:22 AM

or more Boyd's lack of composure and smart playing. Morris didn't call the best game, but there was more to our flat performance than that.

Re: I agree. But it makes me wonder if it's Morris play calling

Oct 20, 2013, 11:53 AM

Heres my take on ALL that went wrong with O (BTW the D was just as disappointing)

O-line: weak on the right side and the middle, exploited all night with simple stunts and twists. They were able to stop the run and get into TB's head. We know how he plays when he feels pressure.

TE: Were not a noticeable help to blocking and made a lot of drops and obviously the 1st play... We are a lot more effective with the TE making plays. This hurts more than most people realize.

WR's: little to no separation.

QB: locked-in, rushed, forced throws, too many balls in the dirt. Just not sharp. Even the quick outlet passes the WR's were off. The most positive thing I can say is he ran with heart.

Morris: Not really sure what else to say, Sammy cant be THE game plan. The plays all seem to take too long to develop. When compared to the FSU game plan, Winston didnt take more than a 3 step drop in the 1st quarter. TB on the other hand had 7 step drops with a play-action. Just seemed like slow motion by comparison. I would have liked to see more max-protect to allow TB to settle down and try to find a rhythm.

OVERALL: I have never seen a team so affected my momentum and rhythm. It bothers me that we NEED a spark. Why does it take a big, exciting play to make the rest of the O work well? The O-line is the only reason I can think of for this... sort of at a loss though.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm with you on the spark. Well coached teams play like

Oct 20, 2013, 12:25 PM

their life depends on it, even if they are a talent mismatch. That's why so many FCS schools are getting better at winning more against FBS teams. Talent has a little to do with it, but there are better coaches coming out of FCS schools looking for their own FBS shot. (Just my opinion).

FSU played like there was not choice but to win. We played more lackadaisical, and it's not the first time. We have talent. Talent that is better than results more often than not. That's why we usually loose the statistical comparisons, for example.

By the way, your "what went wrong" is a list that could be applied to NCSU, BC, etc. Coaches need to step it up but the players need to also. One motivates - doesn't have to be touch-feely either. The other executes. Our execution seems worse than our coaching to me.

Re: BC exposed a weakness and FSU took advantage.

Oct 20, 2013, 9:53 AM

I think blaming our performance on one weakness overlooks a lot. Our defensive line did not dominate and disrupt. Our receivers read the coverage differently than Boyd, resulting in throws to no one or an interception. Our secondary is weak. I can't think of one area where we excelled.

Prior to the game, I said that I was more concerned with our offense than our defense. That was only partly true. I should have been concerned with both.

Tiger fans, our team needs a lot of work.

Your right when Boyd does not have time to throw he makes horrible decisions...last night was typical for him when he faces pressure!
