Basic offensive philosophy of every coach.

Get the ball to athletes in space.

Lots of different ways to do that.

That's what Texas and Oklahoma did with the Wishbone. Every triple option offense (Paul Johnson at Navy and GT, whoever) had the design to get the ball to the athletes in space.

The run and shoot offense was completely different than the wishbone. But, the premise was still the same. Get the ball to athletes in open space.

Chip Kelly used the super-fast play calling. But, the purpose was the same. Catch the defense before they are ready so we can get the ball to an athlete in space.

Zone reads and RPOs are designed for the same reason.

Alabama and UGA are running schemes not that much different from what Clemson is running.

I don't think the problem with the Clemson offense is so much the system as it is the execution. Maybe the playbook can be tweaked. But, I don't think junking the whole system is going to fix the problem. OC's have to:

1. Analyze the talent you have. Who are the athletes? How do we get the ball to them in open space?
2. Look at the weaknesses of the players who can help get the athletes in open space. If a QB can't throw a deep ball, don't continually run 4 verticals. If a WR can't block the DB, don't throw bubble screens where he has to do that. If a TE cant seal off an OLB on a swing pass, don't call that play while he's on the field.

For whatever reason or reasons, I don't blame the "system" for the offensive woes nearly as much as I blame the execution.

And, lest anyone think I'm giving the coaches a pass, I'm not. Teaching players how to execute is the coach's job. Figuring out which plays to call to give the players the best chance to succeed is the coach's job.

Great post!

I will add to it that a coach's job is not to get athletes in open space on EVERY SINGLE PLAY.

The entire game is a chess match between the offense and defense for each team.

Many plays are run in less space to try to set something up for another play to get more space based on a bad reaction from the defense.

I also think that's where the presnap motion and various formations come in.

Making the defense think they are seeing one thing when something else is coming is a very big part of getting those athletes in space.

Now that was “brilliant” … hopefully TE reads and gets it..

The thing is, Elliott knows this. He admitted in the interview that covered our challenges in the WR screen game that we don't have the right personnel for that play right now. Then he goes out and calls 9 of them. So if he knows the play won't work, and he knows the reason the play won't work....why the H does he keep calling it anyway.

A lot of what is said publicly by coaches is to confuse the opposition coaches as to what we will do during an upcoming game. IOW, keep 'em guessing..... but if you make them think you're going to something you can't do, you'd better have something else you can do that they don't expect.
