Thank You Notes

Jan 24, 2023, 6:50 PM

Is it OK to send a thank you note (thinking Christmas, Birthday gift - Weddings are in a class of their own) by email? By text message?

My own random considerations:

Better than no note at all?
Possibly preferable for some?
Recipient - tech capable or not?

Maybe Tnet is not the place for this, but it just came up in my own abode, and hey, this is the Amphitheatre.

Have at it, or not.

Of course an email thank you is OK frognapper!

Formal occasions still need to involve the USPS and hand writing. Most other things could use calls or texts. The gift giver's age and use of texts or emails should also be a factor.

The best texts involve fireworks, bubbles, hearts, etc., you can even throw in a song video with it to personalize to the recipient.

Always a hand written note.

Email, text, or in person seems lazy. If it is a gift worth sending a thank you note, a handwritten note sent in the mail is the only right answer.

JK, I lean toward your opinion on this, but the devil (I think) is in the details. You said "... a gift worth sending a thank you note ...". What about the rest? Is an email/text better than nothing for those? Not to mention, what is the criteria for that designation?

BTW, I have to hand it to you for the degree of civility you maintain while under constant fire. Not to say I always agree, mind you, but you know... Voltaire and all that.

N.B. I made myself look up the Voltaire quote - to my surprise, he never said the "...defend to the death..." thing, though he expressed similar sentiment.

Think about this -

Someone took the time and probably money to get a gift for you and to you (hand delivered, USPS mail - it all takes time and money). The least you can do is take 10 minutes and the cost of a stamp to send a handwritten note to express your appreciation. You can do the other things but a note received in the mailbox will make a lasting impression. My late mother - southern belle that she was - always said you can tell if someone was brought up “right” if they send thank you notes. So you better believe my sister and I developed that habit from the time we could hold a pencil. And it’s a habit neither of us has broken!

Always hand write thank you notes!

Per Emily Post;

"It’s never wrong to send a thank you note, and people always appreciate getting “thanks” for their efforts. And if you're thinking about whether or not you should write a thank you note, you probably should. Anyone would appreciate receiving a thank you note, and some people may be expecting one."
