Step one of taking away football

Don’t these liberals understand it’s better to play young so you learn how to properly hit?

Have you ever seen 8 year olds play football... they don’t even really tackle. Give them this then next thing you know they will keep raising the age and football will be gone

The US population continues to grow and there will always a be a huge supply of football players. There will always be some great athletes out there playing. It's huge.

This is what liberals do. They get one thing agreed on, and then chip away until it's all gone.

That isn't all that bad . Fundamentals of proper tackling aside , there will be changes made in this way over the coming years .
Remember how Dale's death prompted all of the changes NASCAR made to prevent it from happening again ? Same deal .

It's not particularly political , the need to be safer with our kid's brains and spines .

Pediatrician viewpoint here. It really shouldn't be a political issues. There is pretty solid evidence that playing tackle football early increases cognitive problems down the road. It truly is a children's health issue. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/19/sports/football/tackle-football-brain-youth.html

Doc...there is no question you know far more than I ever will on this subject and I mean no disrespect, but when you link an article to The NY Times as reference to your point, your post loses any credibility. The last time the NY reported the news rather than print lies to further the liberal agenda was sometime during first term of the Reagan administration.

Not only does Trump watch CNN for the “real news” everyday before he turns to Fox & Friends for his ego boost, he has staffers summarize both the NYT and WaPost front and editorial pages.

The article is reporting on a published study

Mar 5, 2018, 1:48 PM [ in reply to Re: Step one of taking away football ]

Do you really think the NY Times is making up a published study? Why don't you go read the study itself instead of dismissing it just because the NY Times reported it. Or you could do a 5-second search and see that every news outlet, including Fox News, also reported the study.

And girls soccer players have a higher percentage rate of concussions than boys football players. It’s not in the spotlight because of the low number of girls soccer players vs boys football. Also, girls in general have higher rates of concussions than boys largely due to the lack of muscle development in their neck muscles compared to the boys. Lets ban girls sports. It’s dangerous.

Really doesn’t have to be a political issue...based on the evidence this makes sense and hopefully more take up the issue soon.

Whether it eventually results in football being banned, who knows...but if so, we will all be ok without football...and I say this as a man who LOVES the game.

Re: Step one of taking away football

I have been called a nut but if you know history this is how Nazi Germany started. Slowing passing laws to protect its citizens and then they gradually passed additional laws taking away more and more freedoms. The bankers thought they could control Hitler, he sure proved them wrong. They say history repeats itself. Is it happening now on the United States??The Patriot Act was just a good start. The government has doctors so afraid to treat their patients because of the new drug laws. The addiction rate grows higher everyday regardless of all the strict laws while many suffer every day.

People like Lindsey Graham have no back bone. And we are losing the best congressman we have had in a long time in Trey Gowdy. A great future presidential candidate is going back into law practice.

It scares me where our country is headed. Call me crazy but wait and see what our government continues to do to take away our guns if not our guns the ammo for the guns.

Based on my research gun control never works. We have spent millions for the DEA and what have they accomplished?? Legalize drugs and tax them so you take the profit margin out of the market.

And it all starts with making tackle football an illegal sport for the youth. Tackle football is not the problem it’s the fact the our athletes are are faster and stronger and they play to many games in a season. Take away 4 games in NFL season and you take away a lot of hits. But then you cut into the NFL money machine. They want have that.

Unless we start fighting for our rights we want have any!

I'm all for safety and developing equipment to minimize the possibility of serious injury, but we have children playing soccer who wear no helmet or protective gear and I have never seen this issue addressed. Having played high school football in the 1930's when our protective gear was nothing compared to today's gear, I can always use that excuse to explain my mental status.

Surely they wear the standard shin guards? Injury rates in soccer are a small fraction of what they are in football. Heading the ball is already banned in the US for kids younger than 11.

Mr. Joe, you're in better shape mentally than just about anybody we know!

You're right that football isn't the only sport where traumatic head injuries can occur. Hopefully Shelton Mitchell and BC's Mitchell won't have any long-term effects from Florida State turning round ball into an extreme contact sport. Hopefully this type of play won't be a trend among wanna-be youth coaches. I think one of the key issues here is exactly how these kids are coached, whether they learn to play clean and safely, or if they try to get away with whatever they can.

Maybe boycotting the NFL is going to kill football?

College football will do well without the NFL with an education being the light it should be.
