Q: How does a senior QB, arguably the best we've ever had,

not know to step up into the pocket rather than drifting out of the back of the pocket right into a sack?
Answer: coaching.
There were several examples of this Saturday night. I'm a big fan of Boyd and this is not a criticism of him, as I've seen this happen to several Clemson QB's over the last few years. As time goes on, they get less and less pocket presence. How is that possible if not for bad coaching?

I just think Tajh gets lost sometimes and its like all his training goes out the window. Ultimately Morris has to find some way to make Tajh learn what to do no matter how hard.
But it seems on Tigernet tajh is an untouchable sometimes with regards to his faults but he has a good many (more than most would admit on here).

I don't understand how we can make such good reads and throw to the open receiver ,, early in the season .
Games where 7 or 8 players had catches .

The way I see it, the only place SC was getting pressure all night was up the middle. It didn't make sense for Boyd to step into the pocket and closer to that pressure. The right thing for him to do was to try and escape and extend by running to the outside (away from Clowney). Yes, you cut the field in 1/2 when you do that. This is when his WR receivers have to help him out by altering their routes to that side of the field, his TE's and/or running backs need to release to an open spot on that side of the field as well. As the QB escapes out of the pocket. the offensive line (and possible a free RB) need to try and seal/contain the back side of the line to slow trailing D-linemen.
Based on this specific game situation, if you want to put this on someone, put it on the line and the receivers, not the QB.

There were a couple times were the Oline actually had decent blocking and for some reason Boyd just bailed and didnt step up in the pocket. Instead he rolled out towards clowney screwing over his tackle who did a good job allowing a sack.

That rolling TOWARDS Clowney isn't the smartest idea...
If I had to guess, I'd say the reason Boyd bailed was his receivers were covered down field.

Clowney is bad enough on his own but when your Tackle actually does his job and has him blocked you cant help him out.

That whole response points to coaching duties and you are right about WHAT THEY should be taught to do but they did not do any of this so is it teaching/coaching or just stupid players over the last 5 years!

Tahj lacks it. You have to feel the rush. The sack where he ran in to Clowney summarized my frustrations with Tahj, which are not many. Thomas had Clowney sealed. The entire right side was sealed and wide open, If he rolls right he has wide open passing lanes or running lanes. Instead he peals back left directly in to Clowney. That's just a lack of presence. You don't need great speed or athelticism to have pocket presence. Guys like Brady aren't great athletes, but they feel the pressure and move accordingly. Tahj just lacks that. Love the guy, he's been great for us in almost every way. But he's lacked this for all 3 years he's been here. Will be very interested to see how 2 guys with NFL bloodlines handle to pocket next year. I just see Stoudt as a guy with that presence, and that presence is the difference between a sack and a big play

Stepping up into the pocket is coached. It is 101 level.

The O-line is coached to create a pocket where the outside guys are run upfield. The QB is then coached to step up in front of the outside guys, then scramble to the side if needed. This is basic stuff, yet Clemson QBs don't seem to get it. I remember Whitehurst making this mistake late in his career at Clemson. I don't think this is a player issue, it's just not coached well.

you can coach a player what to do, but players react in games, intinctually. Some have it, most don't. It's like vision for a running back. Some can read the blocks and see where a hole will open up, others need a clearly visible hole or simply run where the play is designed to go. Instinct is many times the difference between being good or great. Tahj lack pocket presence and probably always will. He has the tools to play at the njext level, but that lack of presence will keep him from being a great QB, even a starter. You simply cannot run in to sacks. He does. When it comes down to it all the coaching in the world cannot overcome the split secon reactions that occur in games that are just natural for any player

You never know what the real story is-coaching, concentration, etc. You'd figure when Tajh ran into Clowney on his exit from the pocket he would have made a mental note not to do that again.

But Tajh does that once he starts getting rattled with pressure. He stepped up into pressure and made plays against LSU last yr.
He must have some mental block against usuc. He had that 'deer in the headlights' look in his eyes on the sideline last night.
