Places to go/see in Louisville and hotel suggestions?

Aug 7, 2015, 5:26 PM

Decided to book a hotel and make a weekend of it for the Clemson/Louisville Thursday night game. Anyone know of some good places to go? Particularly anywhere with good bars for after the game and nights over the weekend. Would also like to get a hotel relatively close to wherever that may be, if anyone knows a good spot. TIA!

Also, if it helps, I'm 22 so a somewhat younger crowd would be good.

Went to Louisville for the derby last year and feel in love with the place.

Hopefully you're a bourbon man- if so you must do some distillery tours. Woodford reserve is a little pricy but they class theirs up. Buffalo trace is the best overall for price and tour quality.

Eat and drink at Proof. Haven't had a better dining experience. Jeff rubys has pricy steaks and they're worth it. Lilly's is a good place to take a lady.

We stayed at the Seelbach. Great hotel with a lot of great history. The brown hotel is also great (home of the Hot Brown and it's delicious)

Check racing dates for when you're going and catch a day at Churchill downs. You never know how much you like horse racing until you try it. Plus booze and gambling are pretty good combination.

A 22 year old could probably not do better than 4th Street Live, a cluster of clubs right dead center in downtown Louisville. It's a young crowd with tons of babes, lol. Also downtown is the Louisville Slugger Museum and manufacturing site. You can watch baseball bats being crafted by the true experts in the field, most of whom have been at Slugger for decades. Contracts with Slugger like Babe Ruth's, Lou Gehrig's, Mantle, all hang in glass cabinets. The Babe's bat - notched 27 times, lol - from his breakout season - is also on display and you can hit against batting machines (My daughter did it in heels, lol). It also gives you a good look (behind Plexiglass) of 100 MPH pitches, just to get a sense of what the heck that looks like. Troubling, lol.

The Muhammed Ali Museum is a masterpiece of design and information. People rave about the experience. It's about 2 blocks from Slugger Museum, 4 from The Yum! Center, Louisville's 22,000 capacity state-of-the-art basketball arena which may or may not be open to tour. Around the Yum! are some super high quality pubs and eateries. Louisville is a foodie city so you can be selective about where and what to eat in wide-ranging styles. I've lived all over the world and Louisville is every bit the equal of the best foodie cities.

Downtown also boasts an incredible walking experience, not just among all the excellent Museums, but along the River - for miles. Recently landscaped (10 years), it is scenic and easy to walk. An old railroad bridge across the Ohio to Indiana has also recently been converted to pedestrian-only travel. It gives a remarkable view of Louisville and the Ohio River, including river traffic, huge barges carrying coal and sand and gravel, and now and then, paddle wheelers, a couple of which are permanent fixtures along the river, docked right downtown and sometimes on the loose for tours and excursions. It's a little like living as royalty, lol.

Over by the stadium - where motels are substantially cheaper - is Churchill Downs, Louisville's college baseball stadium, each within blocks of the football stadium, easy walking distance. The Churchill Downs Museum is also a wonder for horse people. You can play whatever tape or film is available for every Kentucky Derby ever run. My favorite was the Secretariat vid, lol. You can also get up close and personal with true thoroughbreds if you time it right.
