PGA Championship….not a fan of 220-250 yd par 3s

Where it’s just who can knock shidd outa a 3 iron…
Would much rather see imaginatively designed 3 par holes in 170-200 yd range that challenge shot-making.
This tourney is by far the weakest of the 4 majors…

They used to have to hit 3 irons all the time. Nicklaus won

the US Open at Pebble Beach with a 1 iron on 17. We still have to hit those clubs - though not 1 irons - and I enjoy seeing them have to do it once in a while. As we're seeing, its not easy for them either.

All I have heard all week is how this guy sets up courses and he is 'player' friendly. LOL.

But Southern Hills can do that. I have played it twice - from the member tees, typical 6500 yards, not long - and both times I could not have possibly hit the ball better, didn't miss a shot all day, and shot 8 strokes over my handicap both times. You can have a 9 iron and think, "I have no idea how this is going to hit the green." And it doesn't seem to matter where the pin is, if you roll it 3 feet past it just keeps on going. It is beautiful, wonderfully laid out, all visible and in front of you - but it if gets on top of you the big numbers sort of stack up.

I am not recalling that particular hole, but Southern Hills

is not merely in Tulsa, it is IN Tulsa. 61st and Lewis is Tulsa proper, dang near the middle of town, so the property has hard boundaries: You can't go across 4 lane 71st Street, for instance. That is why some of the tee boxes aim the players over a green. To find 7500 yards on an in-town course requires some creativity. Anyway, while I don't know about that hole, I imagine there are only so many places to direct traffic.
Its a huge facility, more than accommodating a 7000 yard course, but with 400 yard drives what are you going to do?

Right. All I was saying is that I don't know what is there.

With different traffic patterns on the longer course, what happens if the cross walk was not there at all, or 100 yards closer in? I don't know. But yes, I figure they will do something about it next time. A bunch of majors have been played there, but the course never had to be 7500 yards.
Some of the best, most iconic courses in the country can't host tournaments anymore.

There will probably never be another tournament at Merion -

the course with the wicker baskets instead of flags - for that reason. Merion is one of the top 5 courses in the country, and it can't be made long enough now.
Cherry Hills in Denver has the same issue, I think.
Edit: If you need to go from 7000 to 7500 yards to accommodate today's length, I figure you need about a minimum of 75 yards of width for rough, crowds, etc. 500 x 75 is 37,500 yards, or 9 acres. I know I went to Clemson, but I think the math on that is right. There are a lot of iconically wonderful courses that just don't have it. I am of the school that something has to be done. Probably just change the balls. Go back to wound balata balls (circa 1975), or a ball of similar flight, problem solved.

Merion has it in 2030 and 2050 - US Open that is, not PGA

not that I will be around to see it in 2050!
Merion Golf Club
ardmore, pennsylvania
Merion was host when Justin Rose won the 2013 U.S. Open. The national championship will return again in 2030 and then 20 years after that in 2050. Merion was also awarded two U.S. Women’s Opens (2034, 2046) as well as the 2022 Curtis Cup and the 2026 U.S. Amateur.

Will be interesting to see how they do it. As of a few years

ago they considered themselves out of the tournament business. Maybe they acquired more land or went to creative set ups (a tee box set up over an existing green). Or maybe rather than complaining about seeing players hit 3 irons to par 3's - as if that was never a thing - we'll be complaining about seeing players hit to 5 yard wide fairways.
See edit above.

Nelson, Hogan, Sneed, Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, etc would have the same clubhead speeds as the players today. There are more players today of near that caliber - you have to beat more players - but the best players are not better. We think they are because that is what we see. Give them shorter drivers, steel shafts, wound balls ... 280 yards would be mammoth, like it was then.

but I loved it. Shifting this to a par 70 with these long ### par 3s made em sweat, and it was noticeable. I don't think many of em could hit a 3 iron...DJ had a freaking 9 wood haha.
I think we'll see a lot more of this to combat the length. What else can these courses do? Turn member par 5s into 4s, and stretch the par 3s to all 220+. Instead of bunkers, put water up front, or false front the greens so it rolls 30 yards back.
The winners went to a playoff at -5. She was flexing the muscles she had to flex and I was all about it.
That 526 yd par 4 with a tiny green? Yes, give me more of that.
Next time, get the rough thicker and longer to make it tougher.
Cold, wet and windy in the middle of May, after 2 days of blistering heat? Check.
Also loved the curveballs the bunkers threw them early in the tourney.
If these bros are going to bomb 350 yd drives, better hit that #### thing on a dime and have the wedge game to back it up.

of the 4. The last 2 PGA's however, have been great.
I'll definitely be going to the 2024 edition in Valhalla, Louisville, KY.
