Opinion on Playing Time Strategy/Transfer portal

Sep 21, 2022, 12:45 PM

What is your opinion on which strategy is best?

A. play everybody so nobody feels like they need to transfer in order to be seen by possible NIL donors and pro scouts.

B. run the risk of running a kid off who feels like "they shouldn't have to split reps"? Who wants to be stars and "the man"! Probably feels like they shouldn't be splitting time with freshmen or walk-ons, for example.

**In the day/age of the transfer portal - I get the philosophy of playing everybody. But, that strategy has a dark side to it. Some players are "rhythm players" and probably can't ever get into a rhythm being part-time starters. But, if you don't employ this strategy you run the risk of having a highly rated player get impatient and leave on you.**

Let's say it was your call: which would you employ?

God bless our coaches who have to navigate this! It can't be easy to try and keep that many people happy enough!

I would go with a variation of option A and say that you’ve got to give your scholarship players a chance to get as many game reps as possible in order to show you’re investing in their development. Giving meaningful reps to walk-ons, or to scholarship players who aren’t producing when they get into games, sends a message about priorities whether it’s intentional or not. With the portal as an option, we can’t expect players to stand around and watch while less-talented or less-productive players get opportunities.

Neither A or B. Dabo has consistently played more people than all other power five teams. This has nothing to do with NIL or the portal. He does that to give experience so when we get to November and hopefully playoffs we have plenty of experienced back ups. Nyles Pinckney’s play against ALABAMA comes to mind for one.
You might ask Jimbo that question though.

I wonder though; "if Dabo is just ahead of the field" and has done it knowing what was coming down the road!
I remember playing young players, but it's picked up tremendously over the last few years!

I kind of believe he's just getting ahead of it.

I would do exactly what Dabo and staff are doing now.

Good post. In general, I don’t think reps and game time decisions should be made out of fear of 18-20 year old kids and the portal. I get the reality of that part of college football is much more difficult now and it’s easier for me to say that than it is for them to navigate but I believe there is true value in building depth.

When you get to the playoffs and are playing your 14th or 15th game, it’s nearly impossible to do that with your best 25-30 players. That was one of my biggest takeaways from us winning in 2018. We were dominant, sure, but we were fresh mentally and physically. And I think Dabo believes this too. The reps our guys get are genuine and esp after all the injuries last year, he knows guys may need to step up at any point in the season. That used to be coach speak but it’s very real now with younger rosters and the in-season exits / portal entries.

All that to say I don’t think we’re running anyone off per se. But I think if the players don’t bring consistent, genuine effort in practice and the games, Dabo and coaches don’t want to burn genuine game minutes on “depth” that may not be there when they need them. And if the player sees that, they move on.

HollywoodTiger Great post!

I appreciate the responses to this in fact! But, I have to say, I think I really agree with you on your points.

I just know - it's something I wouldn't want to have to manage. But, and this might be orange-colored glasses - but, "I really think we have the best coach for today's transfer portal college football landscape"! IN terms of not making promises he can't keep and such, for example. He tells them; "if you work hard and deserve to play, you will play"! Which is as fair as it gets!

Thanks again!
