Death Valley: Clemson Holds On, Defeats No. 24 NC State 20-14 UPI ARCHIVES; OCTOBER 2, 1993
CLEMSON, S.C. -- Clemson built a 20-0 lead after three quarters Saturday and held on to defeat 24th-ranked North Carolina State, 20-14, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game.
North Carolina State reached the Clemson 14-yard line in the final seconds, but surrendered possession after an incomplete pass on fourth down.
It was the second consecutive loss for the Wolfpack, who were beaten by North Carolina, 35-14, last week.
Patrick Sapp hit Marcus Hinton with a 43-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left in the first quarter to give Clemson a 7-0 lead. Chris Franklin's 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and Nelson Welch's 45-yard field goal with 35 seconds remaining in the first half increased the Tigers' lead to 17-0.
Welch added a 24-yard field goal midway through the third quarter. Clemson then withstood a fourth quarter rally by the Wolfpack.
Gary Downs scored on a one-yard run a little more than two minutes into the fourth quarter and a 69-yard touchdown pass from Geoff Bender to Eddie Goines pulled North Carolina State within 20-14 with 6:15 left in the game.
Clemson beat North Carolina State for the fourth time in five years and improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. North Carolina State slipped to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
