Punt teams: OK, I just can't hold this

in any longer. WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH OUR PUNT RETURN UNIT?
First of all, do we even ATTEMPT to block a punt these days? I think my kids were in diapers the last time we blocked a punt. Even if we get a good rush on the punter it's like our guys just stop in their tracks when they get to the guys blocking for the punter.
And returns? Non-existent. Here is the total punt return yardage for the last two ganes:
Boston College : 1 total yard
Miami: 1 total yard
I mean, do we even ATTEMPT to block for the punt returner? Or maybe we're just skeered the punt returner will fumble so we don't even try?
If this doesn't get corrected soon, Dabo needs to make some staff changes or his seat may start getting warm.

I'm just saying that in your scenario, it's a given that there is a disparity in the quality of are defense and of are punt return teams. I'm simply suggesting that such a disparity might not be substantial enough to negatively overcome the a) the quality of our defense in and of itself, or b) the quality of our defense when compared to the menial degree to which special teams affects our playing style.

I think once the staff trust Ray Ray to make better descisions, we will have another real threat and our coverage will change.
But as is, I agree its like we are just playing the dont mess up game.

I really liked the part in Bob's original post when he said Dabo was gonna find his seat getting warm unless our punt return game improved.

Risk management. We have less chance of the negatives (turnover/lose yards) by fair catching and a higher chance of the positives (give the ball to our great offense to score).
With an offense as good as ours, we are just looking to get the ball back to them as fast as possible without giving the other team a chance to make something happen.

When the O can score from any place on the field at any time. Fair Catch the ball without a turnover is fine by me and I believe the coaches as well. Wonder what team you are watching????

I think Dabo just wants us to be conservative in that part
Oct 26, 2015, 11:21 AM
|

Of the game. He doesn't want to risk running in to the punter or late hit on the punter that would result in a first down for the opposing team. As far as punt returns, we have been really conservative in the past but it seems we are trying to do a better job this year of returning kicks. Imo, i think dabo would rather let the offense have the ball than to risk a muffed punt or fumble on the return. I can agree with him but it would be nice to see us returning kicks like we did when CJ and Ford were here

Also we really don't have a reliable guy to return PR

We have Artavius Scott but i wouldn't want to risk an injury to him on a punt return when our best WR is already most likely out for the season. Ray Ray Mcloud should be the obvious choice but as we've seen so far this season, he fumbles alot and not reliable in that category

Interesting point - clearly made by someone who
Oct 26, 2015, 11:31 AM

doesn't really understand the game.
2 things happen right after a punt return for a touchdown and neither one of them is good.
1. The defense has to go right back out .... so they don't get the positive effects of the defensive stop they had just made. Demoralizing.
2. The offense is robbed of snaps that could very well be KEY snaps for the backups - meaningful snaps that will build for next year.
Dabo knows what he is doing - please let him do what he is paid to do.

We are 7-0. Protecting the ball on special teams and your talking about somebody's seat getting warm!!!! Wake up, even great punt return units are only successful like 9% of the time in getting 10 yard returns.

Hey, don't put anyone back and just be sure they don't fake the kick. We have already had one team this year (BC) that stopped us and had a roughing the kicker called and gave us a first down and we scored. The defense goes three and out and we get a roughing call and give them back the ball. Our defense needs a rest for their hard work, so don't do anything to prevent the offense from getting the ball. In stead off a block in the back when chasing a guy down field, turn around and knock a guys block off coming downfield. Our offense can take the ball all the way down the field.
