TV is the issue

Sep 20, 2022, 9:49 AM

For us old folks who have been to Clemson games for over 60 years, there is no issue with the Hill because it is our history. The Hill is rarely full, just like the corners in the Upper Decks are rarely full. The issue for the younger folks who post here is their image of Death Valley is the packed out night games against teams like FSU or other top teams from the past. Fast forward to last week and we have a night, TV game against La. Tech, whoever they are. Years ago, that game would been a day game and not on TV and the Hill would not have been full either. Now that the ACC Network shows every game they can, there is no requirement that a night game be a big game. I have no idea whether there is a requirement that fewer folks be on the Hill but despite that, the cupcake night game against La. Tech would have never been a full house.

Not true . . .

I grew up in the 80's and went to Clemson in the mid 90's, and while the Hill, through the years hasn't always been **absolutely** slap/literally 100% full to the teeth every week, it was (A) much, MUCH fuller than it is now; (B) "Full" 80-100% (depending on whether conditions, game hype, etc); for all intents and purposes; and (C) the thin times were the exception or at the end of bad weather games or blowouts; and (D) almost always full or darn close at least when Clemson ran down the Hill. This was true from as long as I can remember (early 80s), until very recently, at least 2016. It seems to have been tapering off since then, bit by bit, and it is noticeably less now than it was from just 3/4 years ago (despite the fact that 3/4 years ago it was already tapering off some).

The TV bit may indeed cause more consternation concerning image b/c people notice . . . but it's not an imagined thing. It's going on.

To be fair . . .

you are right when you say that it's not always full, but I don't think that's the point. People aren't merely noticing that it's not 100% all the time. There is a middle ground between "at capacity," on the one hand, and "noticeably sparse," on the other. People aren't claiming it's always routinely been spilling over the brim . . . they are however, claiming that it's not typically been so sparse. That's the difference I think they're noticing.

Schedule better games and the Hill will be filled

I've been going since the 70's and then when I was a student the Hill was General Admission. The games with good teams were always filled.

In the 80's GG was pretty full most games

and super filled for opponents like UGAy, USuC, UNCheat, and Maryland. So, perhaps the early and mid 70's not so filled but we weren't winning too much until 1977.
