both.
The opt-outs are another modern invention, designated as student-athlete friendly, which to me are generally a cop-out toward the school, the program and the loyal fanbase, all of which gave the cop-out the ability to so!
Chicken-sh*t is what some would call it, regardless of all the excuses!

at the Piggly Wiggly on Rivers Ave in North Charleston. HAd to wear a white shirt and tie back then.
I appreciated the opportunity they gave me but i split on them as soon as i found a better job. I'm sure there is some Piggly Wiggly enthusiast on a Piggly Wiggly message board right now cursing me out for making decisions about my life that had nothing to do with them.

I transferred to the Charleston PW on 17 and worked 3rd shift my sophomore yr at Clemson . It was only a 14 min drive to 10th street on folly beach . Got to surf every morning after work contemplating my evil decisions in life..

But if someone said, "we know, you have your post-Piggly Wiggly gig already planned. But if we could get one of our sponsors to make it worth your while. Maybe we can give you $50,000 to show up for a few more shifts and we'll earmark some of that money for catastrophic injury insurance. So if you get a severe injury while working for Piggly Wiggly, that prevents you from accepting that next opportunity, you won't be harmed financially for helping us make money."
If that happened, you might have stayed a couple of more weeks at the Pig, no?

I Think These Clowns Forget That The NFL Weighting of Draft

Picks includes a sizeable character and background section. Now it won't radically crush a Day 1 pick but it can move a kid markedly across rounds 2 and beyond.

Maybe in the old days but I'm not sure that's still the case. Pretty easy to decide the risk is far higher of an injury ruining your draft stock than skipping a relatively meaningless game. Now if someone skipped a playoff game I do think that might have more of a negative impact.

According to my ND buddy, Marcus Freeman has a team rule that once a player declares for the draft they have no other option than to skip the bowl game. He doesn't want them to be focused on two different things at once.

There's nothing to gain from playing in a non-CFP bowl game if you are draft eligible and advised that you will go high. His time is much better spent finding an agent, prepping for the combine, etc.
An argument could be made for historic bowl games (Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl, etc), just for the experience and memories alone. But it won't affect the draft stock. The stigma of sitting out a bowl is gone now. Each man has to make the best business decision for his own future.

People give "opt-outs" a pass on the grounds that "they may get hurt playing football"! Think about that for a second. Two things: 1. where is the data that supports you hurt your stock by playing or that somehow the odds of you getting hurt go up during the bowl game? 2. Ask Hendon Hooker if "non-contact injuries" are not the leading reason players miss games?
Go on; ask him!
The data points to non-contact injuries being the leading reason players miss significant time off the field. Non-contact injuries that players "every dang year" get while they get ready for the combine. Torn pectoral muscles, torn biceps, ACL tears, MCL strains, hamstring pulls, etc.
Makes zero sense even from a "financial standpoint"! Not if you are just going to go workout and basically play contactless football "ANY WAY" for free!

The bowls could pay the players NIL deals for their participation in their games.

There's no point in a draft eligible player who knows he's not coming back playing in a bowl.
and it's better for the team as well.
Give the guys who will be here next year more reps in practice and in the bowl game.

If the BEST players OptOut, at what percentage does…
Dec 7, 2022, 5:39 PM
|
|
…the OptOuts make the bowl they would play in IRRELEVANT? 10%, 25%, 40%
It seems that with the portal (now we’re talking 2nd, 3rd, 4th+ players) that the OptOuts are on the increase.
If approximately 50% of the team is upperclassmen and eligible for the draft, and one-third of these are 1st team, plus add-in the portal-jumpers, seems like 8-10 OptOuts essentially throws the game into irrelevance.
Now, the fans that are attending are paying to see the 2nd team play, not the 1st team.
Now, the bowls become so uninteresting to play because no one wants to attend or watch them on TV. How long is it until the bowl is so unprofitable as to make it not worth playing at all?
This is what they call a Cascade or Avalanche Effect.

I asked my company commander if it would be OK if opted out of a couple of minor fire fights, while serving as a Marine platoon commander in Viet Nam. They were skirmishes that the major news organizations were not covering, and heck I had 26 men who were perfectly capable of getting shot and killed, so why did I need to be there? Now if it had been the Battle of Khe Sanh or the TET offensive in Hue, then buddy I would have been all-in! Heck, I had my career and future wife to think of and my life was much more meaningful than those men who might wind up with blue collar jobs. I can't believe Captain Nollenberger told me to get my a$$ back out there and join the action. Darn bastid!
