NIL/Transfer Portal dumpster fire

Dec 20, 2022, 4:15 PM

I like to check the transfer portal website every few days to catch up.....

Wow - there are a TON of kids in there. What "concerns" me is how few are going to be picked up.

How many of these kids who are basically broke coming into college, hit the portal, go nowhere and end up with no future?

Few go on to bigger/lateral things (Derion Kendrick, Chez Mellusi, Mike Jones). Many take a MAJOR step down, program-wise.

Lyn J Dixon?
Demarkcus Bowman?
Ajou Ajou?
Taison Phommachanh
Paul Tchio?
Ray Thornton?

Most of those listed above do little to nothing at their new program. What gives?

How many of those in the Portal were asked to leave by their coaches?

Good question

Dec 20, 2022, 4:24 PM

Before Dion Sanders, I wasn't aware of any that were asked to leave a program...

I'd bet money that it's been happening at several SEC programs. Now they will be more open about it.

They have until January 18th to withdraw from portal and return to their team, but some are probably asked to leave anyways. Wish Bowman would have stayed here, his speed would kill teams along with Cade at starting QB.

2024 student level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gotta wonder how awkward that is for the player....

Dec 20, 2022, 4:26 PM

If they hit the portal....no one wants them....and they have to plead with the coach to let them back on the team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The team does not have to accept them back.

Dec 20, 2022, 4:27 PM [ in reply to Re: NIL/Transfer Portal dumpster fire ]

Once a kid enters the portal the team can decide that he cannot return.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wonder how many kids...

Dec 20, 2022, 4:26 PM

.... just quit football every year before the portal.

Clearly a good number did. Kids have 5 years to play 4. 25 ships per year for 5 years is 125 ships. 85 is the limit. That means on average 8 to 10 kids per year didn't return.

I have no idea, but I'm wondering how many of those kids in the portal would not be playing next year even if there were no portal.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good point.

Dec 20, 2022, 4:30 PM

I'm just in awe of how, what I consider hi-end players (Major P5 schools), leaving programs for much lesser programs

And

Those already at small schools, hitting the portal as well for basically nothing.

Im left wondering if there is any value placed on a college education anymore.

Re: Good point.

Dec 20, 2022, 4:37 PM

For this subset of students, the answer is no, most do not really want to be students. Let us hope the majority of non athletes are in fact there for the education.

It ain't about education anymore, nil killed that.

have essentially said it was of no value when they pushed for players getting paid.

Universities decided long ago...

Dec 20, 2022, 5:21 PM [ in reply to Good point. ]

.... that education was not a high priority for football and baseball players. Every action the NCAA has taken in the past 50 years has either had no effect on academics or lessened the importance of it.

Re: Universities decided long ago...

Graduation rates are the highest they've been since the 60s. A lot of it is driven by the academic progress rules - a player can't stay eligible without showing progress toward a degree, as opposed to just maintaining some minimum GPA.

And the APR system that is supposed to penalize schools for not graduating enough (but don't know of a case where the school was actually penalized yet).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But, upon further review...

Dec 20, 2022, 9:18 PM

.... if a kid leaves, for any reason before completing 4 years at the school, he doesn't factor into the Grad Rate.

If you sign 25 players and 20 of them leave during the first 3 years, then 4 of those 5 who stayed graduate that would calculate to an 80% graduation rate.

It encourages coaches to "explain to the kid" that he really needed to consider other options than playing football at this school.

Just a little correction: they have to leave in good academic standing.

Just look at the penalties the NCAA put on UNC’s basketball program after that fiasco. Not interested in academics whatsoever. They are not doing these young men any favors. 90% of them will never see the NBA or the NFL.

Re: Universities decided long ago...

Dec 21, 2022, 10:57 AM

Lot of hyperbole about the UNC "scandal." It wasn't athletes only who didn't have to do coursework, it was open to anybody. And just a lazy professor or two, not something systemic. I had some lazy profs at Clemson, but that's before they reduced the graduation requirements so much.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Anymore? At academic fraud UNC they didn’t even pretend to go to class.

Dec 20, 2022, 5:26 PM [ in reply to Good point. ]

Coming to play football, not play school, isn’t new.

the saddest part is they forfeit their free college tuition

Dec 20, 2022, 4:36 PM [ in reply to I wonder how many kids... ]

and possible career over some misguided dream that football is sustainable for their future. They just don't know it yet but entering that portal might be the biggest mistake they'll make in their lives. The portal works for alot of those elite talents and a small number of above average talents but i bet for many its a ticket back to their hometown working at big lots unloading trucks. Thanks to that governor in California we've taught our kids to prioritize "gettin' theirs" and greed over education. Hopefully at some point they can regulate it to make it safer for youngsters.

Re: NIL/Transfer Portal dumpster fire

Dec 20, 2022, 4:49 PM

NIL has nothing to do with the Portal. My understanding of Dabo's concern with players going into the Portal was that hundreds would potentially lose they shot at a college education and I agree with that. Only a very small % of college players will ever step foot on an NFL field and it is sad if any players leave their schools to better their shot at the NFL.

Money has a way of screwing up a lot of things! When it interferes with your education and possible future it has hit you where it hurts! I don’t see things changing. It is going to be interesting to see how the NEW NCAA commissioner reacts to this problem!

The new commissioner is a politician. That tells 90% of it.

less that 3 percent make it to the nfl

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed NIL and the TP are separate and distinct but...

Dec 20, 2022, 5:46 PM [ in reply to Re: NIL/Transfer Portal dumpster fire ]

it's untrue NIL has nothing to do with the TP. NIL is a tool schools can use to lure players from other programs.

Despite denials, Jordan Addison's transfer from Pitt to USC was influenced by NIL money commitments he received from USC supporters.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The TP is a bloodbath for so many guys right now

Dec 20, 2022, 5:29 PM

but that will change.

Once the awareness of the downsides of the TP truly begin to register on players and parents, use of the TP will probably decline.

The sad stories of guys who lose scholarships and gain nothing in return will pile up.
